The
Caller
(2011)
The
Caller is a Puerto Rican
based thriller about a
woman named Mary Kee
(Rachelle Lefevre), who
has moved into a new
apartment after
splitting from her
overpossessive
ex-husband. At once she
starts receiving phone
calls from an elderly
woman, Rose, who seems
to be confused as to
what year it is and who
is living in the
apartment as she tells
stories of her own ex.
Then, the calls become
more disturbing as a cat
and mouse phone chase
happens between the two.
Meanwhile, to get away
from her ex, Mary Kee
joins a Spanish class
when she enters the
wrong class and meets
John Guidi (Stephen
Moyer), who instantly
falls for her. As Mary
Kee and John become more
involved, the phone
calls from Rose continue
and she reveals
information that turns
out to be true, even
though she seems to be
an invalid in an old
folks home. Are these
calls from the past?
What does the gardener
(Luis Guzmán)
know and is not telling?
Did Rose actually murder
someone and burying them
in the house? Is any of
this real? Who knows...
From the director of a
good little thriller Dot
The I and nothing much
since, The Caller is a
rather labourious film
that relies on the silly
conceit of a time
travelling phone call.
But, the film tries to
pack in far too many
ideas to compensate for
the not fully realised
time travelling phone
call conceit which
causes the end to make
not a lot of sense and
it seems to come out of
nowhere. I've seen
plenty worse, but this
ain't a recommendation.
While the below sex
scene is pretty dark,
I'm pretty sure Rachelle
is wearing nipple
patches. It looks more
likely she did in the
next shot after taking
her top off. But, we
briefly see her bum, so
it's not all bad news.
