White
Bird in a Blizzard is
a drama that starts in
1988 about Kat
(Shailene Woodley), a
teenage girl who is
having a tumultuous
relationship with her
mother Eve (Eva
Green). They once had
a great relationship
but as Kat has grown
up, they've drifted
apart and this has
resulted in some
peculiar and somewhat
clingy behaviour from
Eve, even more so when
Kat begins dating
neighbour Phil (Shiloh
Fernandez). One day,
Eve just disappears
and Kat and her father
Brock (Christopher
Meloni) are left to
pick up the pieces,
except Kat doesn't
seem that fussed about
her mother's
disappearance. She
starts seeing a
psychiatrist (Angela
Bassett) and also
starts sleeping with
the detective (Thomas
Jane) in charge of the
investigation. Three
years later, Kat comes
home during a break in
college, seemingly
moved on, meeting her
father's new
girlfriend (Sheryl
Lee), but it becomes
clear that there are
some unresolved
issues.
Oh, and what did
happen to Eve?
Bizarrely distant
movie about an
emotional issue that
strangely turns
emotional near the end
only to get distant
again for the reveal.
The movie isn't
necessarily about the
disappearance of Eve
so much as Kat's
reaction to it, but
she is mostly business
as usual which leaves
the movie quite flat.
A strange movie that
never seems to gather
any steam or real
insight into the
issues. Maybe I'm
missing something, but
I felt very removed
from the movie.
Hmmmm...
