Charlotte Rampling plays a concentration camp survivor who stops her former tormenter in a menial job. Instead of turning him in, she gets back into the same relationship they had when he was her captor. His ex-Nazi pals tell him that he needs to kill her or they will kill both of them, because she is a living witness. The two of them end up prisoners in his apartment. It's a complex psychological study, perhaps sensationalist. Vincent Canby of the New York Times called it "a piece of junk". Many lamented that a female director portrayed a woman who was used by the Nazis as a sex toy, then was willing to recreate the experience willingly. I think the point was that the experience affected her so profoundly that she cecame deeply disturbed. To me that's even more chilling than if she had been outraged and turned him in to the war crimes tribunal. It was stylishly filmed in Vienna, mostly in rain and mist, in a dominant green-grey hue, rendering it overwhelmingly dreary, as befitted the subject matter. Rampling lent her unique skeletal beauty to the unhealthy pallor. I think the vidcaps are some of the best I have done. (#1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 #7 #8) Holy Smoke Kate Winslet in Jane Campion's "Holy Smoke". Kate plays a victim of religious "brainwashing". Keitel is a deprogrammer. They become involved. Note that there are clear full-frontals in the first collage. These aren't DVD caps, obviously, but not bad for bootlegs of a movie not yet in general release. Had these sitting around. I talked about "Total Eclipse" some issues back. This is the obscure Kettly Noel, who had a tough role in that she had to have sex with muscle boy. But my nominee for "hazardous duty pay" is David Thewlis, who had to kiss DiCaprio and roll around naked while wrestling Leo. Now that's acting. I don't think they could pay me enough to play that part. You have to love Leo's little moustache. Gotta like a guy with the balls to walk into the barber and say "make me look like a twerp". Of course, Leo did have a bit of a head start on that twerpiness even before the moustache. |
