"Angel"
Angel (1984) is a New World Pictures exploitation film about Molly, prep school honor student by day, who becomes Angel, Hollywood Blvd. street hooker by night. Abandoned by both parents, she has supported herself since she was 12, and her "family" are her co-workers, street performers, and her gay landlord. Someone is killing hookers. After three of her friends are killed, Angel sets out with a big gun and lot of attitude to exterminate the killer.
I should have been suspicious when I saw this film, which I had never seen on DVD, on eBay. It is an Asian bootleg, and roughly VHS quality. Despite the films 4.4 of 10 score at IMDB, I enjoyed this film when I first saw it, and still do, mainly due to the character development of the collection of oddballs that comprise Angels friends. Donna Wilkes (Jaws 2, Days of our Lives) as Molly/Angel shows no more than pokies. Both Donna McDaniel (Hollywood Hot Tubs) and Graem McGavin (My Tutor) show breasts as victims, and there is a top-notch girls locker room/shower scene which includes full frontal from a half dozen unknowns. I enjoy this one enough that I will buy another copy if they ever remaster it. C+.

"Maze"
Maze (2000), which IMDB calls Touched is a sappy romantic comedy about a handicapped artist (Tourette Syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder). We used to say that a large aerospace company had a policy, "Hire the handicapped, they are fun to watch." While often true (Caveman's Valentine and As Good as it Gets), Tourette Syndrome is just plain hard on the nerves. Just to make sure we got the point, the director reinforced every vocal eruption with a first person POV using a hand held video camera, for an especially nauseating effect. Who could love this man, you ask? Why obviously, his best friend's girlfriend, after the best friend runs off to play do-gooder doctor in a deprived African nation, leaving his girlfriend, who, unbeknownst to him, is pregnant, with nobody but our artist to rely on.
I probably could have forgiven all of the above as a fair price to pay for long, clear, well lit full frontal from both Laura Linney as the pregnant friend and Sheila Zane as a nude model, but they added one crime too many -- they turned Bye Bye Blackbird into a funeral dirge. This is a film for middle aged women judging by the voting pattern at IMDB, and that would make sense. The men are all flawed, the woman opts for the man who truly cares about her, and treats her the way she expects to be treated, even with his flaws, there are cute babies ... yep, chick flick. Ebert likes this one a lot at 3 stars, but I found the entire Tourette/shaky cam so distracting I can't give it more than a C-. It should have been my kind of film, and I couldn't wait for it to end.

MOVIES:
Going Places
(new to DVD) is a Gerard Depardieu movie that I actually like! In fact,
Depardieu was excellent in this existential, amoral, sometimes tragic, and
often downright silly movie which defined much of my generation's post-Vietnam
angst. The whole thing for us then was "what do we do now"? The two stars of
this film are my age, and were playing characters the same age, so it was easy
for me to relate to then (1974) and now. They just decide to amuse themselves
with a life of pranks, petty crimes, and whatever else will pass the time. I
wrote an all-too-long review, if you care to know more, because I think this
film is very close to greatness. It makes me laugh out loud with its total
disrespect for everything, and it also fills me with sadness on several
occasions. (Because, after all, French comedies are never JUST comedies, are
they)
I don't know anything about a film called La Portiera
Nuda, but Mr Skin came up with some captures from that film - nudes of
Irene Miracle (she was the long-suffering girlfriend from Midnight Express who
pressed her breasts against the glass.)
UPDATES:
there is a new Encyclopedia volume dedicated to Miou-Miou. Pretty much
everything in the volume is new (there were previously about a dozen Miou-Miou
pics, of which I kept only four, and added 37 new ones, encompassing nude
scenes from 1974 to 1997.

MEN AND WOMEN DIFFER ON DINNER CHECK-GRABBING
So The Men Would Be Right - A researcher at the University of Michigan-Flint showed students two videos of a couple on a date. In one, the man picked up the dinner check, in the other, they split it. While
both sexes reacted positively to "chivalrous" behavior such as holding the woman's chair, they split on one thing: women viewed the man who paid the check as more respectful and romantic, while men saw him as less respectful of his date and assumed he had an ulterior motive. The researcher said it shows men and women view check grabbing differently, but that men, being male, might have more insight into the motives behind it.
* Especially since the man in the video was Bill Maher.
* If he wanted to get her into bed, he should've picked a restaurant other than Denny's.
* Or maybe men just want to convince women to date only guys who don't pick up the check.
* Women also saw that guy as having a lot more money.

Mariah Carey favourite for Worst Actress of the Year
Mariah Carey is one of the favourites for this year's Golden Raspberry Awards.
The Razzies are given to the worst films of the year. The full list of nominations will be announced on February 11. Mariah is on the shortlist revealed by the Golden Raspberry Foundation, according to www.variety.com. Tom Green is a possible nominee for worst actor, director and screenplay for Freddy Got Fingered.
In the worst screen couple, possible nominees include Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz in Vanilla Sky; Sylvester Stallone and Burt Reynolds in Driven; and Mariah Carey's cleavage in Glitter.
John Wilson, who came up with the idea of the Razzies 22 years ago, says he expects Mariah Carey to be among the contenders for worst actress.
"She's the female equivalent of Battlefield Earth," he says.
