"Foxfire"

Foxfire (1996) concerns a drifter named Legs (Angelina Jolie) who appears in a High School Biology class, and convinces the less popular girls to get even with the teacher who fondles every girl that is too afraid to stop him. The girls form a bond, and Legs teaches them to have enough self-respect to stand up for themselves. As she says, "Don't take any shit." There is a scene where Jolie tattoos her breast, then the other girl's breasts. This provides the exposure. Including Jolie, Hedy Burress and Jenny Shimizu.

Jolie is a natural actress who also trained with Strassberg. I don't think she is capable of doing a bad job. This film has a lot to say to adolescent girls, but is less interesting to others. It did keep me awake, mainly due to the performances by Jolie and Hedy Burress who plays her lover. The film is shot in Portland, which can be a very scenic City.

IMDB readers have it at 5.5 of 10. Not surprisingly, it scores highest with females 18 to 29. Berardinelli awards two stars, and it scored a dismal 17% overall, with a big fat 0% from the top guys. It didn't fare much better at the box office, grossing a mere $258K. I found the plot to be a little trite, and over-wrought at times, but there were some very good moments, such as when the evil teacher tells Jolie she has detention. Her response? "I don't even go here." The film is beautifully shot, with some tricky but effective lighting. C-

    I believe it was Bart Simpson who first uttered the immortal quote "I've based my life on his teachings". Well, at least he was the first to utter it in reference to a floppy-shoes clown. I've based my entire life on the teachings of Dalton, the hero of Roadhouse and the world's toughest bouncer. Well, at least he's the toughest bouncer with a degree in philosophy from NYU.

    Roadhouse is the White Trash Citizen Kane. What more is there to say?
