"Emerald Forest" (1985)
Emerald Forest (1985) was produced and directed by John Boorman (Deliverance, Excalibur, etc), and is easily my favorite of his films. Very loosely based on a true story, it is about an engineer who is sent to the Amazon to build a dam. He brings his wife, and young son and daughter with him. The son is taken by the chief of a primitive tribe, who raises him as his son. The engineer spends his free time for the entire 10 years he is building the dam searching for his lost son. When the two are re-united after 10 years, the engineer finds that Tomme, his son, played by Charley Boorman, son of John Boorman, is more than happy where he is, and has no interest in returning to "The Dead World" and his birth parents.
Boorman always manages stunning visuals, and here he couldn't miss. We have lush tropical rain forests with nearly naked ample breasted tight ripe-bottomed young Brazilian Indian women everywhere we look, and interesting tribal paint. The visuals alone would be enough to recommend this film, but the cultural messages, mainly the "modern" culture seen through the eyes of the primitive Indians are also powerful and well-presented. There is more than a little mysticism, plenty of action,
and a pretty fair romance sub-plot as well.
In case you couldn't tell by now, I am a huge fan of this film, and have been waiting for Tuesday's DVD release for a long time. Ebert says three stars and IMDB readers give it 6.4/10. US gross was $24.467m. This was the debut film for the lovely Dira Paes (Boorman's wife in the film), who is
still working, and has 15 credits at IMDB. The DVD transfer is very nice, if a little dark in the forest scenes. Unfortunately, not much in the way of special features.

I looked at Red Planet. At last, the kind of film I like to make fun of. Plenty of incorrect science, cheesy dialogue, and goofy mysticism. Bravissimo. I didn't have a good enough copy to improve on Orion's images, so here are his again. I'll get the whole deal and look at the deleted scenes when the DVD comes out March 27th.
I looked at Shadow of the Vampire. Cool movie, very strange. Catherine McCormack had a topless scene, but at no time in the entire movie are you able to identify her face as the familiar image of Catherine McCormack. Same big boobs, though. This will look cool on DVD, but is too dark to do much with off a bad copy.
