"Jungle Holocaust"

Jungle Holocaust (1977), also known as Ultimo mondo cannibale, Cannibal, Carnivorous, The Last Cannibal World, and The Last Survivor, is Ruggero Deodato's best film on the subject. It is supposedly based on a true story of an oil exploration team that was captured by stone age tribesmen on Mindanao. Two escape, taking a female hostage (Me Me Lai) with them. You might remember Me Me from The Au Pair Girls last month. This is probably the Gone With The Wind of cannibal films, and includes several scenes of cannibalism, including a very graphic BBQ at the end of the film. Those with squeamish stomachs should avoid the last 4 images.

The acting was strong, and the jungle setting was lush. There were also many shots of jungle critters, and the film managed some suspense. While cannibal films are not my favorite genre, this film was watchable, partly because of the Unrated Wide Screen transfer. IMDB readers say 7.0 of 10. This will appeal to horror and gore fans, but is probably a little too raw for mainstream tastes, so C+.

    "Bummer!"

    Bummer! (1972) is another Friedman film, again written and directed by William Allen Castleman, who is primarily a composer, having scored many films, including Endless Summer. It is what is called a rough, which means it features nudity and violence towards (naked) women. A terrible rock band collects several groupies, and enjoys them, except for the bass player, who is overweight, and a psychopath. Much of the film is excuses to get the women naked, including a trip to a strip club, but, when the bass player goes off the deep end, the film gets more serious.

    Here is the nudity breakdown:

    Diane Lee Hart -- Breasts and buns as another groupie
    Heather Collins -- Breasts as a topless waitress
    Anonymous Stripper -- Full frontal

    Ignore the summary at IMDB, as it is way wrong. There are not enough votes for a score yet. The transfer from Something Weird Video is not as good as many they have done, but is not at all bad. If you chose to make the scene with this film, you will find lots of groovy chicks with out-a-sight hooters that will not bum you out, far out locations, and with-it early 70s dialogue. The violence at the end is sort of a bad trip though. C.

    Spaz
    "Dark Confessions" is the latest white-slavery eurotrash directed by Lloyd Simandl to be released in North America (but only available in in Canada it seems). As with the nudity, much by Rena Riffel, Kate Rodger, Lisha Snelgrove, and a parade of hot Czech totties. The Canadian release has alot more nudity and flogging than the UK release from a year before.

    Penman
    Penman delivers some excellent images from "Bully" and in my opinion, they really showcase director Larry Clark's background as a photographer. Each frame almost looks as if they were posed in spite of the fact that in the scenes themselves, the cameras are moving around quite a bit.

    I just watched this movie yesterday, and thought it was good, but a bit of a let down. I was very interested in the extremely complex bully character (excellently played by Nick Stahl), but the film spends more time with the dumb kids that commit the crime. Yes, I understand that they are dumb and aimless. While I respect the part of the story that shows how casual they were about conceiving the crime, I didn't think it was necessary to spend 80 out of 100 minutes focussing on how casual and stupid they were, or listening to their moronic, and seemingly ad-libbed banter.

    I supposed it was Clark's intent to not want us to hate the bully, but rather just tell the story from a more objective point of view. However, the bully was evil, twisted, manipulative, and very interesting. I for one would have liked to have seen more of that character. Perhaps that would have given me a even greater understanding of why they killed him. For the victims, we would understand their pain, and desire for revenge a little better. For the others, I think it would have demonstrated their lack of a motive, and given us a better understanding of the 'they were just bored teens along for the ride' angle.

    But of course...the here's the really important part....the nudity.

    Monster's Ball Sex Scenes 'Vital,' Says Director

    BERLIN (Reuters) - Monster's Ball's Swiss director defended an unusually long and explicit sex scene in his new film on Saturday, while star Halle Berry described the movie as an "out-of-body experience."

    Already considered a possible Academy Award candidate, "Monster's Ball" had its world premiere in Berlin this week.

    Director Marc Forster and Berry, who co-stars with Billy Bob Thornton, faced a barrage of questions about its sexual content at a news conference on Saturday.

    "I saw it last night and forgot how long it was," Forster said.

    "You forgot?" Berry retorted.

    Forster said the graphic nature of the scene had required a spot of sharp cutting to see the film past the film board in the United States.

    "I had to cut a minute to get the rating. I tried to convince them the scene was vital. It seems you can't have too much thrusting. We cut some out," Forster explained.

    Berry said she had seen herself on screen in the film like an "out-of-body experience."

    "I thought, wow, look at her. It was the first time. I thought look at that person," she said.

    The film tells the story of racist Death Row prison guard Hank, acted by Thornton, who falls in love with a black woman, Leticia, played by Berry.

    The two leads and the supporting characters all live in an emotionally bleak world mostly devoid of love. Hank tells his son he always hated him, feels the same about his father, and spews out racist epithets.

    But the deaths of Leticia's husband in the electric chair, Hank's son after a violent confrontation and Leticia's daughter set the stage for Hank and Leticia's unlikely relationship.

    Deep loneliness and sex bind them.

    Berry, who stars in the forthcoming Bond film before also taking on a part in the sequel to the X-Men, said Monster's Ball had given her the chance to move away from her typecasting as a beauty.

    "I could leave my physical self in Los Angeles. We filmed in New Orleans. She cared little about herself. I didn't work out. I lost weight. I was rather waif-like. I didn't care about my body," she said.

    Monster's Ball was released nationwide in the United States last week in more than 400 movie theaters after a restricted early showing.
