"The End" (1978)

The End (1978) is a black comedy staring Burt Reynolds (who also directed), Dom DeLuise (who stole every scene he was in), and Sally Field (who showed most of one breast twice). Reynolds discovers that he is dying of a "toxic blood disease," and does not take the news well. He visits a hospital to see what death will be like, and decides it isn't for him -- suicide will be better than a slow painful death, and when he is put in a mental hospital after his first failed attempt, he makes friends with schizophrenic Dom DeLuise, who decides to help his friend end his life. Sally Fields plays Reynolds girlfriend.

Maltin loves this film, and awards three stars. IMDB readers have it at 6.0/10, which is high for a comedy. I did not find it especially funny, with a few exceptions. While Reynolds is in the hospital, he decides to make a phone call. One of the ICU patients is using the pay phone to have phone sex with his girlfriend. He is standing there with his arms full of tubes, IV bottles hanging from a rack on wheels. When he won't give the phone to Reynolds, Burt clamps off his medicine. Later, after he gets a "sympathy fuck" from Sally Field, she admits that she didn't have an orgasm. While they are doing it, we see Sally petting her cat. The closing monologue is highly thought of, where Reynolds is bargaining with God, while Frank Sinatra is singing "My Way."

If seeing someone try to commit suicide by crushing his head in an electric hospital bed is your idea of humor, this one might be worth renting. Image #3 features Sally with one of the ugliest expressions I have ever seen on film. One of the personality traits that draws people into acting is ego. I always appreciate it when an actress is willing to look really bad on screen when the film calls for it. Other examples are Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon, who are also willing to look less than their most alluring.

    "The Wild Angels" (1966)

    If I told you a film starred Peter Fonda, Nancy Sinatra, Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, and featured veteran character actor Michael J. Pollard and character actress Kim Hamilton (Guiding Light, General Hospital, To Kill a Mockingbird), and was partially directed by Peter Bogdanovich, you would be thinking major Hollywood release, right? Wrong. The Wild Angels (1966) is a Roger Corman biker exploitation film, which used members of the Venice chapter of the Hells Angels to fill out the cast. This is the film that started Bogdanovich as a director. He hired on as an assistant, but before the film was over, directed the second unit, and did the editing of his footage.

    Fonda (Blues) is the president of the Palos Verdes Angels, and Fonda is his old lady. The gang goes to Meca, California, to recover the bike owned by Dern (Loser), which was stolen by Mexicans. Ladd, Losers old lady, of course goes along. When the police interrupt the attitude adjustment the Angels are giving to the "taco benders," Dern steal a police bike, and is shot by them in pursuit. The angels break him out of the hospital, only to have him die at their hangout. While they are springing Loser, one of the gang members assaults a nurse (Hamilton). The decide to give loser a proper funeral in his home town, but Blues realizes that he has "no where to go" after all that has happened, especially since he was the only one identified by the nurse.

    Maltin hates this film at 1 1/2 stars, calling it a poor second cousin to Easy Rider (which was made well after this one), and IMDB readers have it at 4.6/10 based on only a few votes. People felt much differently about it in 1966, as it grossed $6.5m in the US. IT was made for $285.000.00, which probably wouldn't have paid for even one of the stars 10 years later. It was nominated for a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

    Images of the stars have been included solely because of their star status, and have no exposure. There is incidental underwear shots from several of the female gang members, but the real exposure is a see-through bra worn by Hamilton during the rape scene. This is a well-made film. Obviously, there was a lot of talent to work with. The plot is probably the weakest element, but gave ample opportunity for sex, drugs and violence. Photography was very good for a 1966 film, art direction was top-notch in the gang hideout, and the DVD transfer is a very good looking Anamorphic. It is too bad they couldn't have assembled the major players for a commentary on this one. Resorting again to the Scoopy report card system, and noting that the genre is exploitation, I give this film a solid B.

    Anybody interested in playing Fantasy baseball in the ESPN leagues - my youngest son and I and one of his friends are in an rotisserie league at ESPN. If you are interested, it's a live draft league, drafting March 18th, 5x5, only eight teams in the league, so it will be a small, close-knit group. We kinda stink at this, so you can probably kick our asses, but we do stay involved, trade a lot, use the player pool a lot, check the pitcher match-ups every day, and generally enjoy the hell out of it anyway. My son's friend is supposed to be pretty good at Fantasy Leagues, but who knows? The name of the league is Hit the Sign, if you are baseball nuts and want to join us. (espn.com - click on fantasy and it should be self-explanatory from there)

This recently made the news when New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani called the work "disgusting," "outrageous" and "anti-Catholic" and called for a decency panel to keep such work out of museums that receive public money.
