Years ago there was an article on Jean Simmons and the making of Spartacus. She stated in the article how Mr Kubrick and Mr Douglas were discussing the pond scene and how they thought it would work better if Ms Simmons was nude. They brought their idea to Ms Simmons and she agreed. She said that later that day all she could think about was - "What have I gotten myself into." From that article I always assumed that she was nude in the pond scene.

Recently I was able to get in touch with Robert A. Harris who was involved with the restoration of Spartacus and I asked him about the pond scene and to the differences between the American version and the European version of the pond scene and the nudity of Ms. Simmons.

He stated that the only difference between the versions was one shot of Ms Simmons on the shore line in the European version and that that one shot was lost and could not be included in the restoration.

He also stated that he had conversations with Ms Simmons about the pond scene and she told him that she was never nude in the pond scene as she was always wearing moleskin throughout the filming of the pond scene.

  • * Yellow asterisk: funny (maybe).

  • * White asterisk: expanded format.

  • * Blue asterisk: not mine.

  • No asterisk: it probably sucks.

Summer Coda

(2010)

Summer Coda is romantic drama about an American girl Heidi (Rachael Taylor) who has come back to her place of birth in Australia to go to the funeral of the father she has not seen for a long time. She hitchhikes her way to the funeral and is met by Michael (Alex Dimitriades), a local orange farmer who offers to drive her to town. At the funeral, Heidi is introduced to her father's new family. She is warded off getting anything out of the family by his widow, so Heidi leaves town. Then, she changes her mind and goes to see Michael, who lets her stay for a while. Meanwhile, it's orange picking season and a bunch of regular orange pickers camp down by the river waiting to pick for Michael. Over the next few days, the relationship between Heidi and Michael develops, but there is one thing holding them back. A good romantic film that is a bit of a slow burn, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, although it might test the patience of some.

Has a pretty interesting supporting cast of misfit Australian actors as well.

Oh, and Rachael Taylor shows her breasts, briefly...
