Follow-up
French movie
maven Defoe wrote the
following clarification of
Euro HDTV standards:
"In France:
- With an antenna you
have numeric TV: SD
(720x576) for all
channels and HD
(1920x1080 – it used to
be 1440x1080) for four
channels.
- HD Cable TV is often
1280x720, but Orange
broadcasts in 1440x1080.
The correct ratio is
16/9: so to have a
correct aspect ratio in
clips from Orange or in
old clips from broadcast
HD, you either need to
upscale the 1440x1080 to
1920x1080 or downscale
it to 1440x810. My
movies can be 1920,
1440, 1280 or 720,
depending on the
source.
Most of the channels
are DRM protected, so I do
not know how he (the new
guy) grabs the movies."
Of course, my translation
may be wrong. Defoe speaks
no English and I speak no
French, so we have to
communicate in Estonian.
This makes our communication
imprecise, since neither of
us can actually speak
Estonian. Thank heaven for
Google Language Tools.
(I'm kidding. Defoe's
English is perfect.)
Best ... trailer ...
ever
Although it is a drama about
the porn industry, Cherry is
not porn, but a legitimate
film starring (among others)
James Franco and Heather
Graham. The female lead, Ashley
Hinshaw, is naked in the
redband version of the
trailer.
TV Round-Up
The
Girls Guide to Depravity
is a new Cinemax show which
is billed as a younger,
hipper "Sex and the City,"
although now that I think of
it, they could not make a
older, unhipper version if
they tried. Anyway, here's
the nudity from episode 1:
Die
Chefin is a new
German series.

Des
Soucis et Des Hommes
is a new series on France 2.
We've seen highlights of the
first two episodes. Here are
the next two.
