Monday Stanley Kubrick We spend most of our time talking about movies directed by men and women who have difficulty tying their shoelaces, but we are fans of real movies as well. We lost the best of the best Sunday, when the position of "greatest living director" was vacated. Stanley Kubrick, at 70, died in his St Albans home. As Ben Jonson said upon Shakespeare's passing, "he was not of an age, but for all time".   RDO does Castaway Here we have a strong combination. Castaway has about as much nudity as any mainstream movie ever made, and RDO never leaves any stone unturned. When he finishes a movie, you can be sure he has included the best frames from every nude scene in the film. The net of that combination is about a trillion images of Amanda Donohoe in the buff. Paule Baillergeon. at the art house with The Realist The Realist has been dipping a bit into Charlie's territory with this set. Many of you have asked when we were going to come up with some good nudity from the luscious French babe, Judith Godreche. Well, here ya go. The caps don't do her justice. She is beautiful and soulful, and her body is most impressive. You may have seen her in The Man in the Iron Mask. My recommendation is NOT to rent 1990's "The Disenchanted" if you are in North America. The print circulating now (just out on video) is dreadful, with the colors washed out, and the movie has been chopped to 75 ambiguous and often incoherent minutes. (It was a short film to begin with, but at least three minutes have been cut, and they are probably three minutes we wanted to see.). Possibly the original print of the director's cut is worth seeing if you can get it in Europe. It was an early effort from Benoit Jacquot, director of A Single Girl and Marianne, and it has some excellent moments. The Realist's next subject is "Girl on a Motorcycle". In 1968, this was considered a very daring film, although it might be rated PG-13 today. The entire movie consists of Marianne Faithfulll on a motorcycle journey from her husband's bed to her lover's, interspersed with her thoughts as she makes the trip. The director is a cinematographer by trade, and the photography of the European countryside makes for an excellent travelogue. As for the substance of the movie ... well, you should be able to find better ways to spend your time, like taking up alligator wrestling, listening to old Al Gore speeches, or re-reading Moby Dick. The acting and photography are good, but that just isn't enough. Here's a few of Marianne Faithfull. Although she is topless quite a bit, and fully naked in one dim scene, the two main sex scenes were solarized to slip through the censors, and are about as exciting as looking at a lava lamp. The art/set design and photography are beautiful, including the outdoor shots as well. (How badly can you screw up Paris?). Angie Everhart is gorgeous, and shows some of the goodies. And maybe, just maybe, that's enough. These caps follow the chronology of the movie. Angie Everhart, Another 9 1/2 Weeks. Y'know, Angie is beautiful, she has a magnificent mane of hair, and she fills out a sweater as well as anyone. But she seems to have done her acting training at the Royal Kathy Ireland Academy of Dramatic Arts. Angie Everhart, Another 9 1/2 Weeks. Some models make a successful transition to acting. Jessica Lange, after a fitful start in "King Kong", became one of the finest actresses of her generation. On the other hand, Cindy Crawford has been, shall we say, a bit less successful. Miss Everhart, as an actress, is a helluva model. I sure enjoyed looking at her, though. Here's a decent look at her bottom. Angie Everhart, Another 9 1/2 Weeks. Actually, I've been a little unfair to Angie because her movement and her facial expressions are all realistic, so you really can't put her in the same group as Crawford and Ireland, but she just can't deliver a line without sounding like a 16 year old cheerleader. Rourke wasn't bad at all in this movie, but he sure isn't aging too gracefully. Or maybe he's aging as well as could be expected, given the raw material he had to work with. He looks like a ventriloquist's dummy with a recent hair re-fitting. Possibly in his next film he could put a new spin on the Chucky character. miscellaneous, Another 9 1/2 Weeks. Click here to login, sign-up, or get info. When you're talkin' bad movies, the two syllables, "Tro-ma" probably appear together on occasion. Actually, Tromeo and Juliet is a reasonably good movie. Let me reword that. It sucks, but it doesn't suck anywhere near as bad as you would expect. On a scale of 1-100, it would be about a 65, which makes it exactly 65 times higher than Troma's second-best film, and there's no Mickey Rourke or Depardieu. The acting is actually passable, some of the gory gags and spoofs are actually funny, the musical score is good, and some scenes of the film have almost an "A" look to them. She plays a perverted version of the Shakespearian Nurse - she wants Juliet's favors for herself, but she loves Juliet so much that she protects her relationship with Tromeo from those who would oppose it. Debbie has spent her entire career in the grade-b world, but you would be quite surprised at how good she is in this role (certainly too good for Troma). If she got the chance and an appropriate part, I think she could do fine in real movies. OK, they aren't so hot in quality, but you can see what's going on, and there just isn't that much uncoverage of Frances out there. Angie Harmon in "Lawn Dogs". She's really a babe, kind of a younger Ali McGraw face, but more charming and a better figure. Unfortunately she had a small part. If you haven't seen this movie, you might like it. It has a surreal charm, and a certain magic to it. Maybe not a great film, but great filmmaking in many ways, and I liked it a lot. From John Duigan, the Australian director who did Sirens, Wide Sargasso Sea, and The Leading Man (the Bonjovi flick). Duigan hasn't quite struck paydirt yet, but I think he might if he'd move a hair closer to the mainstream. He has as much talent as any director I can name, but he's stayed with offbeat and stylized material which is often coldly satirical. (Although Lawn Dogs does have some warmth in the characters it likes... it polarizes the world into those with magic and warmth, and those with mechanical and shallow lives. This sounds a bit childish when I describe it, but you have to know that the movie is realized through a child's eyes.) Reviewers were sharply divided on this movie. Roger Ebert gave it only 1.5 stars, but some critics said it was one of the best movies of the decade. Tilly/Gershon in "Bound". I sure got fooled by this movie. I expected a cheesy piece of exploitation crap with plenty of sex and nudity. Instead, it was a sumptuously filmed thriller with some sharp characterizations, some twists that keep you squirming, and almost no nudity. It's actually a pretty damned good movie!
