"Revenge"

Revenge (1990) is a Kevin Costner action romance right out of a romance novel, complete with the hero and heroine being reunited at the end, and her dying happily in his arms in a romantic location. Can we have a long sigh while some of us dry our eyes? As expected, this is a chick flick, granny variety, with women over 45 giving a 7.6 and men in the same age group at 4.8. The overall score is 5.1. Besides a sappy plot, the film has to contend with bad acting by Costner, and a one dimensional villain played by Anthony Quin. At least Madeleine Stowe did what was required, looking great and showing some skin.

Costner is a naval aviator (the F-14 Tomcat) and decides to leave the Navy after 12 years, go to Mexico, and fall in love with the wife of a leading crime figure, Anthony Quin, and that is the better half of the movie. Quin finds out, and doesn't take it well. He beats up Costner and leaves him for dead, burns Costner's cabin to the ground, slices Stowe from mouth to ear, and makes her turn tricks in a whore house, where she is given regular doses of heroine. Costner swears revenge. When he finally catches up with Quin and learns the location of Stowe, he apologizes and lets Quin go.

Stowe shows breasts and buns in very badly lit and/or out of focus scenes. Not only is this not well made or acted, but it runs an amazing 120 minutes. While some of the locations were very nice, the transfer is too soft to do them justice. The DVD contains a Widescreen version and a Pan-and-Scan 4/3 version. There are no nipples to be seen in the 4/3 version. This is a very low C-, best appreciated by sentimental mature women.

    "Gridlock'd"

    Gridlock'd (1997) is a terrific buddy film/comedy staring the late Tupac Shakur and Tim Roth. It begins on New Years Eve. Thandie Newton, Shakur's girlfriend and the third member of their jazz trio, ODs. That in itself is a little ironic, as she is a health nut, while they are addicts. They finally get her admitted to the hospital, and decide they should give up the junk, especially since they don't know if she will live or die. The film is mostly about them trying to get through the medical red tape and bureaucratic bullshit to get into rehab. There is also an unnecessary sub-plot about a badass pusher after them because they stole their pusher's stash, which he feels he owns.

    For a buddy picture to work, there must be chemistry between the buddies, and they are great together. The subject is all too serious, but they manage to make it a comedy while not losing the message. Newton shows breasts after the overdose, and again leaving the hospital. In both cases, she is wearing nothing but flimsy white panties. I hate to say this, but she seems to be wearing a different pair of breasts than she did in Beloved, leading me to belive that most, or all of what we see in Beloved is prosthesis.

    IMDb readers have this at 6.7 of 10, but critics were nearly universal in praising this film. I found it thoroughly entertaining and a very fast watch. This is a C+. If edgy comedy appeals to you, this is a very good one.

    FYI when I hypercam vids to make the file size smaller I use DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion for the video compressor, then I use virtualdub to compress the audio. The properties for the vids says the video codec:  DivX Decoder Filter & audio codec:  Morgan Stream Switcher which I'm not familiar with. When I compress the audio with virtualdub I use MPEG Layer-3.  A friend of mine told me about compressing the audio about (6) mos. ago. Like I said previously, only been capping for a year & a half & I'm no expert. Hopefully this info will help members with the proper codecs for my vids.
     
    When I cap big brother's I use hypercam mostly & sdp & asfrecorder if the set up allows me. I stopped using camtasia cause the file sizes were always too big, could never figure out the process, over my head lol, plus it cost too much to buy in my opinion.

    I made the .wmv versions of each video. The codecs for these: Windows Video V8, Windows Audio 9. The upside of these is that you know the codecs, and they'll play in the Windows Media Player. The downside is that they are slightly larger, and slightly lower quality.
