Basic Instinct (1992) is now available in a 2160
version, so I couldn't resist taking a look at some of
the best scenes again:
Jeanne
Tripplehorn either was wearing some type of
modesty device, or has the hairiest nether regions ever
known to man, because there is very little, if any, fun
stuff visible, even in this resolution.
And then there was Sharon
Stone. Everyone knows this scene. Unlike the
Tripplehorn scene, the fun stuff is quite visible. (And
I love the reaction of "Newman.")
The film also includes arguably the hottest sex scene
ever to appear in a mainstream movie. Not only does it
include (apparently) unsimulated cunnilingus, but the
sex scene even has a plot of its own. At this point in
the film, the audience doesn't know whether Sharon Stone
is a murderer who has sex with men just before stabbing
them to death. Therefore, whenever Sharon reaches for
something under a pillow, we don't know whether she'll
pull out a jar of lube or a Bowie Knife. When she binds
Michael Douglas to the headboard, we don't know whether
she is kinky or homicidal. That makes a passionate bit
of lovemaking into something dangerous, and allows the
audience to share the range of emotions Michael
Douglas's character must be experiencing. "Will I get
bumped off, or will I just get off?" Yes, I know this
movie ain't Schindler's List in term of social
importance, but it is just great genre filmmaking.
