  • Mute Witness
  • Marina Sudina in "Mute Witness". What a surprise that this is such a good movie, on almost a zero budget. A Hitchcockian thriller. American film company is filming in Moscow. A mute member of their crew witnesses some Russians making a snuff film late at night in their studio. They see her, and pursue her. Police don't believe her story, or maybe the police are also involved in the snuff film ring, or maybe they aren't, or maybe they aren't even real police ... you get the idea. Suspenseful and clever filmmaking, using all the tricks of the horros/suspense genre, with part of the action taking place in the studio filled with grotesque props. Sudina is actually a Russian actress, but was able to play a member of the American crew because her character is mute. She's a good actress. She had to do everything with her eyes, and she did it well. It's actually quite clever to have the terrorized witness be mute, because she can't call for help, or scream, or .... The film also chose the unique tactic of having the characters generally unable to communicate with one another. Sudina can't speak. The other characters generally speak English or Russian, but not both.

  • Larisa Husnolina in "Mute Witness". She was the snuffee

  • When I lived in Helsinki, life had a different rhythm. In Winter, which seemed to last from late August until June, we'd knock off work about 15:00, and head up to the swimming pool and sauna on the top floor of the office. There, we would get naked and drink vodka until we lost track of time or got too hungry to hang out any more. It wasn't hard to lose track of time in Winter. Around Christmas, the sun sets at something like 14:30, so it isn't like we could sneak in 9 holes of golf after work. Well, anyway, when I left I still had no grasp on Finnish popular culture or their language, and I don't ever recognize these actresses or their movies. Maybe I should have stayed sober more. Luckily we have Rossol and Abys to walk us through these difficult matters, so put on some Sibelius and check out Satu Lappi from Abys.
