9
1/2 Weeks |
Haven't heard
from The Realist in a couple weeks. Upon
his return he shows up not with his usual
Asian art film or something, but Kim
Basinger in "9 1/2 Weeks". And
then he goes and violates the Prime
Directive and includes Mickey Rourke in
the shots. I had to admit that Rourke
looked pretty good then. In fact, weird
as it seems, he might have looked good
with a shave and a good haircut. The idea
of him being a corporate exec looking and
acting like this, however, is pretty much
of a stretch on your credulity. There are
some sexy scenes in this film, although
Adrian Lyne is capable of much more
(Jacob's Ladder is one of my favorite
movies). Let's cut to the chase. My vote
for the sexiest screen moment ever. The
rain scene. The cunnilingus portion.

This guy and
Scanman are machines. How do they do so
much every week? Here's Shannon Whirry in
"Fatal Pursuit". I'd love to
tell you about this movie, but I can't
based upon our official site charter,
which forbids me to discuss movies with
Whirry and Wuhrer (the so-called Wild W
clause), and forbids Jr to discuss movies
directed by Tarkovsky or starring Max Van
Sydow. (You'll be pleased and relieved to
know that there is a rider clause in the
Sydow paragraph which allows both of us
to discuss Strange Brew. How about a
Molson's, eh?)

Do you think these guys like Crow and

watch these things? Kristy didn't even

"Valerie Bertinelli did a nude scene
in a film called Ordinary
Heroes. Ever see it?" No,
I haven't. The Bare Facts has this to
say: at 28 minutes into the movie,
"Brief silhouette of breast in a
darkened room backlit by window, when she
takes off her blouse while on top of
Richard Dean Anderson in bed".
Feedback or caps from anyone?

Event
Horizon |
Once upon a
time there were two movies, both
considered masterpieces of their genre.
One was callied "Alien", a
brilliantly realized SF/Horror film from
Ridley Scott, about a deep space mission
that brought back an unwanted visitor.
The other film was called
"Solaris", about a deep space
mission that caused the crew to exhibit
psychotic behavior and keep living out
scenes from their earth life. Solaris, an
intellectual film from the Soviet-era
genius Andrei Tarkovsky, son of the
brilliant but largely untranslated poet
Arseny Tarkovsky, is the more complex
film. It is not explained whether the
hallucinations are caused by an external
force, space fever, passage into a
time-space warp, or just the fact that
you can't ever run from yourself, not
matter how far you go. No monsters.
"Event
Horizon" is a cross breed between
these two legendary deep-space films. The
monster is there, but it inhabits the
minds of the crew, learns everything
about them, every fear, every memory, and
causes their insanity. The idea was
pretty damned good, the special effects
and visuals were brilliant, and they
hired a good cast. Some of the moments
will scare the beejeepers out of you. But
they went over the top in some ways. Too
many explosions (you know those Yanks)- a
fist-fight with the monster, what's that
all about? - too many empty-headed
discussions about what man was or wasn't
meant to know - and ultimately too little
really original. Reviewers were sharply
divided on this film. Some said it was a
truly brilliant scare-fest, others
thought is was a zero-star waste of their
precious time. I don't know. It isn't
Alien or Solaris, but it has a lot of
positives.
By the way,
don't go out and rent Solaris because of
what I've said. Although film critics
have a way of giving Solaris a lot of
stars, I always caution people that it is
almost unwatchable for the average
viewer. Let me tell you a story. I
re-watched Tarkovsky's
"Nostalgiya" recently in fast
forward, at 4X speed. Even at that, the
actors seem to be moving in slow motion.
And I'm not joking. This is literally
true. Tarkovsky's concept of a two hour
film is two minutes worth of plot, two
minutes worth of action, a little bit of
philosophical dialogue, and 116 minutes
worth of atmosphere. Brilliant imagery
and mood, but pacing so languid he makes
an Ingmar Bergman movie seem like MTV.
Here's Holley Chant in "Event
Horizon"
|
Holley Chant,
with the antichrist guy, in "Event
Horizon". Roger Ebert had a funny
line about this movie - plenty of
foreboding, plenty of afterboding, but
not enough actual boding.
|
Holley Chant
in "Event Horizon". Speaking of
the antichrist, Sam Neill, the dependable
veteran uses a Kiwi accent in this movie
(maybe his natural speech?). First time
I've ever heard him actually sound like
he comes from the Antipodes. He's a New
Zealander.
|
Joely
Richardson in "Event Horizon".
No nudity. What is wrong with that
director? Hiring Joely and keeping her
dressed the entire movie? What was he
thinking of? A gorgeous Joely can be seen
very naked in Drowning by Numbers and
Lady Chatterley

Mongoose |
Mongoose came
up with quite a find here. Ewa Aulin in
"Start the Revolution Without
Me". Aulin is the actress who
starred while still a teenager opposite
show business legends like Charles
Aznavour, Richard Burton and Marlon
Brando in "Candy". "Start
the Revolution" was her next movie,
and it was an odd one. Gene Wilder plays
identical twins, Donald Sutherland plays
identical twins, Orson Welles lends some
presence. My college roommate swore that
this was a terrific movie, and I trusted
his taste, but I never got to see it.
(Some reviewers ripped it a new one, by
the way.) It is now largely forgotten.
Until this moment. Miss Aulin was out of
show business before she turned 24. I
suspect she's now working as a clerk at
one of those Shell Select shops in
Jonkoping.

Shannon Fabal
in "Jack Frost". I had a
friendly argument with my daughter,
Katya, about this film. She just kept
saying "this is dumb", and I
was laughing through most of the movie
and telling her it was brilliant. She was
right. She wanted to see a scary movie
and this was dumb. It was designed to be
dumb. Woman locks door to keep out evil
snowman, dramatic music, sight of water
under door (oh, no, he's gonna melt his
way in, she realizes). Cut to the face of
a silly Frosty-lookin'-guy and woman now
dead. Oh, yeah, the joke did wear a
little thin, I admit. I got bored with it
after a while. You do have to love any
movie which dares to show the only known
screen instance of a woman being raped by
a snowman (pictured here by Mongoose).
You have to look just to see the silly
face on the Snowman. You can't blame the
Snowman for going after a little strange.
After all, his wife is frigid.

PAL |
Another
terrific selection from PAL, who is
always looking for the rare and unusual.
Anna Zinnemann in "Goodbye and
Amen"
|
Jennifer Inch
in "State Park". I loved her
duet with Pat Boone. Wait, maybe I'm
thinking of State Fair. "State
Park" is an obscure Rafal Zielinski
movie (Ginger Ale Afternoon, Last
Resort), and I don't even know how PAL
got a copy. Miss Inch started with a
recurring role in the two series about
Anne of Green Gables, but it was downhill
from there, and this appears to be her
last flick. OK, Karaoke time, "our
state park is a great state park ....
take it, Pat".
|
Gina LaMarca
in "Exit". What profession do
you think her character has in this
movie? Let's see, implants, topless, pole
and mirrors, garter belt full of money
... I have to go with New Orleans Traffic
Cop. (OK, she could be an existential
philosopher, but I had to trust my gut
feeling. I love it when one
existentialist comes up with a really
good way to define the nature of
existence, and all the others put dollar
bills in his or her garter belt. I love
to call one of them over to my table for
twenty bucks and get a "Lap
Thought")
|
whatever
profession Gina LaMarca was in
"Exit", I think it's probably a
safe bet that Shannon Whirry was in the
same biz.
|
Lonette McKee
in "Jungle Fever". Is Wesley
Snipes in every movie?
|
Debbie Rochon
in "Abducted II: The Wrath of
Khan". Wait, check that. The REUNION
of Khan. (Reunion, wrath, what's the
difference? Did you remember that a
certain space movie was originally
supposed to be called "The Revenge
of the Jedi"?) Those Khan family
reunions were always filled with Kodak
moments. I guess my favorite part is when
they all place those little bugs in each
other's ears, and drink away merrily, and
just have a good ol' family laugh.

Fairuza Balk
in "American History X". When
Norton was so good in Primal Fear, I
thought it was just good casting. When he
brought so much charm to his relatively
insignificant role in Flynt, I was
becoming a skeptical believer. He won me
completely in this one. It just seems
that he brings a humanity and naturalness
to every role. Very impressive actor.
Fairuza hasn't done badly either. Look at
her early work, like Valmont, and
contrast that to her tough-girl parts
like this. She's shown some real range.
