"My Little Eye"

My Little Eye (2002) is a joint UK/US horror film, shot in Canada, and staring US actors. It has played festivals all over the world, and is not available in the US on DVD. 5 college students apply via a We site, and are accepted to become members of a realty show on the Web. The rules are simple. None of them can leave the house during curfew, they are not allowed to cover any of the Web cams placed throughout the house, and al five must last 6 months to win the prize of #1M. When the story starts, the six months is nearly over. The are all coping, although they are getting a little sick of each other, and the situation.

Then things start going wrong. First, one is notified that his grandfather, who raised him, has died. Then one of the two women wakes up to find a bloody hammer in her bed. Also, the care packages get stranger. What used to always be food now has very strange items. Then people start to die, about the same time they figure out how to connect a laptop to a GPS receiver and get on line.They discover that, far from being the celebrities they imagine themselves to be, what they are doing is such a well-kept secret that none of the search engines even list any of them. They finally find the sight, with a cryptic URL and nearly impossible cryptography, and discover just how much trouble they are really in.

The entire film is shot with stationary cameras, all of the imagery is grainy, and half is green (infrared night shots). I found it one of the most boring films I have ever watched. Jennifer Sky shows her breasts in a sex scene. I did my best with the caps, but they are still very noisy. IMDb readers have this at 5.8 of 10. Some critics compared it to Blair Witch, and praised its style. I didn't much like Blair witch, but at least there, there was sort of an unknown evil to build some feeling of dread. Here, there is very little mystery. Add terrible production values and weak acting, and I can't recommend it. However, if minimalist films such as Blair Witch are a genre, then this is probably a C- by our rating system.

    "Twist + Shout"

    Twist + Shout (1984), originally Tro, håb og kærlighed, is a film by Danish director Bille August. It is actually a sequel to his Zappa, and includes two of the same characters. This time, it is a coming of age story about two High School Seniors in 1963, just as Beatlemania is sweeping the world. One of the two is outgoing, has his own Beatles cover band, and a long standing girlfriend. Rich and proper, she is on her way to being a Stepford wife, and is determined that he will be the husband. He is far more interested in a passionate, exciting girl (Camilla Søeberg), and ends up in a physical relationship with her. Everything is great for them until she gets pregnant.

    Meanwhile, the other friend is moody and introverted, largely because of an overbearing father, and a mother who is too mentally disturbed to leave the house of be left alone. He worships the first girl (Ulrikke Bondo).

    Søeberg shows breasts in a sex scene, and a little bush while she is miscarrying. IMDb readers have this at 6.9 of 10. Ebert savaged it, and only awarded 2 1/2 stars. However, I thought it was one of the best coming of age stories I have ever scene. Hal Hinson of the Washington Post agrees, as does everyone in Denmark. It is the highest grossing film of all time in Denmark. Although the events keep the story moving, it is really more of a character driven piece, and all of the characters are completely believable. It is in Danish with optional English subtitles. This is a B. Even if you are not partial to coming of age stories, you may well like this, as long as you don't have a problem with subtitles.

    Last Tango in Paris (1972)

    One of the most controversial films in history, its semi-explicit sex scenes included Marlon Brando greasing up Maria Schneider's bumhole with butter, then sodomizing her while he soliloquized in a stream of consciousness. The controversy tended to obscure the fact that the film was overpraised by its adherents and overcriticized by its opponents. It was a movie with some strengths: a moving Brando performance, great Paris ambience, and Bertolucci's usual fine direction. Bertolucci probably captured the despair and anger involved in losing a loved one to suicide about as well as anyone ever has.

    But this film is also one boring mother, excessively arty, and filled with completely unimportant and airheaded sub-plots. Nobody would have gone to see the damned thing except for the much-discussed sex scenes.

    FYI when I hypercam vids to make the file size smaller I use DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion for the video compressor, then I use virtualdub to compress the audio. The properties for the vids says the video codec:  DivX Decoder Filter & audio codec:  Morgan Stream Switcher which I'm not familiar with. When I compress the audio with virtualdub I use MPEG Layer-3.  A friend of mine told me about compressing the audio about (6) mos. ago. Like I said previously, only been capping for a year & a half & I'm no expert. Hopefully this info will help members with the proper codecs for my vids.
     
    When I cap big brother's I use hypercam mostly & sdp & asfrecorder if the set up allows me. I stopped using camtasia cause the file sizes were always too big, could never figure out the process, over my head lol, plus it cost too much to buy in my opinion.

    I made the .wmv versions of each video. The codecs for these: Windows Video V8, Windows Audio 9. The upside of these is that you know the codecs, and they'll play in the Windows Media Player. The downside is that they are slightly larger, and slightly lower quality.

    "Wild Things 2"
    It's a stretch to call this a sequel, because all the characters are different (except for the non-existent town in Florida), but the plot theme is exactly like the 1998 original: two high-school seniors scheme to get a lot of money, but things go very wrong in the end.

    The story is interesting to some degree, but the sex (and nudity) is much tamer in fact, I'm pretty sure that Leila Arcieri's topless shots are actually a body double, because you don't see her face in any but one shot, and in that one the face is so blurred you can't be sure it's her. In addition, the double has a hole for a belly button ring, and I couldn't see one on Leila Arcieri. However, the blond that lost her top in the pool is pretty yummy.

    This is an OK drama/thriller, but if you watch it only because you loved the original, you'll be disappointed.
