"Angel
Heart", from Tuna
There are always the
movies we love because they just provide exactly
what we want from a film. For me, this category
includes Blade Runner, Excalibur, and Angel
Heart. I think Angel Heart must be a pretty good
movie, because Scoopy Junior and his brother and
I don't agree on many movies, and none of us will
be admitted to the meetings of the Mickey Rourke
Fan Club, and yet we all like this film a lot.
It isn't quite a
masterpiece. There are a few continuity problems,
and some very confusing elements, but we love it
anyway. Rourke is the eternal cliche, the
down-on-his-luck two-bit gumshoe, hired by a
mysterious stranger to find a missing person for
an exorbitant fee. I can't really tell you what
the trail leads to, because it's a delicious
surprise when you figure it out, probably a
little ahead of Rourke, but I can say that it's a
highly atmospheric and generally complicated
trail filled with voodoo and dark rituals and
murder and frightened people. You won't catch all
the connections at first, but it does actually
make sense. I have been critical of Rourke in the
past, as you all know, but I would not have
objected in the least if he had received an Oscar
nomination for this role. I can't imagine anyone
better as the unpolished, none-too-bright, shabby
detective, not even Nicholson.
Lisa Bonet, former Cosby
kid, used this role to transition from kids roles
to adult roles, by casting off her goody-goody
Cosby image, and she sure as hell accomplished
that, but her career still didn't really go
anywhere. The general buzz on her is that she had
talent and beauty to spare but was so unpleasant
to work with that her phone just stopped ringing.
Look for a strange but
important cameo by Robert DeNiro, who did an
impersonation of his friend Martin Scorcese,
which is doubly ironic when you understand the

What more is there to
say about Showgirls? Elizabeth Berkley's right
eye is brown, and her left eye is a very
beautiful shade of green. I think you'll be able
to see this in the large top image in collage #3.
Berkley collage #1 includes an open-leg pantyless
shot that I don't remember seeing before.
Otherwise, it's the usual suspects. I had
forgotten that the sex scenes are pretty hot in
this movie. The lap dance and the pool scene with
Maclachlan are exceptionally energetic.
