A lot of ok movies are slow starters. Homegrown doesn't really get moving til the 55 minute mark. Ryan Phillippe, Hank Azaria and Billy Bob Thornton manage a pot farm in northern California. When their boss is dropped off then shot and killed by a helicopter pilot, they realize it is time to leave, but decide to harvest just enough plants to pay their wages. They go to Kelly Lynch's place to trim the plants and arrange the sale, and decide to pretend like the boss is still alive. That goes so well, they go after the rest of the crop ($4m worth). The further in they get, the more obvious it is that they don't have a clue what they are getting into. It seems pretty simple. Cut the pot, dry the pot, bag the pot, sell the pot. Only problem is a few details they hadn't considered, such as the local pot growers association, the brother of the dead boss, the Mafia folks that their boss was dealing with, local cops, and more.

Thankfully, there is a way to watch this without being bored for 55 straight minutes. Watch until a naked Kelly Lynch gets out of the shower and dries herself off, showing the side of her breasts, then jump to the 55 minute mark. You won't miss anything important, and the rest of the film moves right along. Jamie Lee Curtis appears as the head of the local pot growers association, and shows some cleavage. Most of the nudity databases are off the mark on this one, mentioning only the shower scene. Kelly has great pokies in much of the film, and clear breasts then buns in a long shot. There is also a well-lit bathroom scene near the end where we see the side of her breast. The shower scene is obscured by steam (probably a fine mesh lens filter), and does not look that great.

The acting is good throughout. It just takes too long to set the plot. Maltin says 2.5 stars, admitting some good points. Apollo says 68, and their readers are more generous at 72. IMDB readers have it at 5.8/10. US gross was a mere $215,553. The concept was good enough for this to be a good film, and there was plenty of untapped potential in the second half of the film. If they could have established the characters and set the plot in the first 10 minutes, this could have been a very good film. I give it a C-.

Bridget Jones's Diary  Screen adaptation of the much loved diary of a 32 year old British woman fighting a bad case of singlehood - she's overweight, drinks like a fish, smokes like a chimney, flirts with all the wrong men, etc. Brought to cinema life by the surprising casting of Renee Zellweger as Bridget. Zellweger brought her "I'm a really good sport, but also very vulnerable" persona to the role, and did a Deniro/Streep thing by gaining a few thousand pounds and adding a Brit accent to play the part. Most of us probably don't like romantic comedies or Hugh Grant movies, but it's an honest one, relatively bullshit-free, and Grant plays an insincere man dripping with a sense of "isn't my false modesty ever so clever?", a role for which he brings a lifetime of rehearsal.

Zellweger didn't get naked, but all that extra flesh was hanging out of her clothing on several occasions. This may be your only chance to see her with acres of cleavage.

Jennifer Love Hewitt: No Nudity... For Now
Hollywood actress Jennifer Love Hewitt refuses to do saucy nude scenes -even though she has one of Hollywood's most-talked about bodies. The Devil And Daniel Webster star is amused by critics' fascination with her 'silicone free' chest - but believes covering up is more tantalizing. She says, "I think the imagination can do much sexier things. It's much sexier to allude to what's under the tight T-shirt than to show it, don't you think?" But the petite star has not ruled out nudity - she adds, "I don't like the word 'never', but I don't see it in my future. I can't get up on screen and do something I really don't believe in because it shows. I wouldn't be comfortable with it."

Anna Nicole Snubs $1 Million
Former stripper Anna Nicole Smith has turned down an offer of $1 million to pose nude for a new British magazine. Smith's agent, David Granoff, revealed that Smith was offered her choice of photographers as well as the enormous fee. He says, "I just relayed this publisher's letter to Anna. Julia Morrow, editorial director of an outfit in London called Title Publishing, wrote to me to the effect that they wanted Anna for the first issue of a new men's title they're about to launch there. "Although the photographs would be glamorous, we would require that Anna Nicole be nude, and for that reason suggest a fee of $1,000,000." Morrow asked Granoff to pick any photographer and promises that the layout will be beautifully executed and will bring out the "natural beauty" of Nicole. Granoff said that his client's response was: "No. Tell them WE don't do that anymore," she said.

Naturally, being a former member of Generation X (what are we called now?) I've been a huge Cusack fan since the beginning, so I look forward to everything he does. I even saw "Anastasia" in the theaters...(My girlfriend made me go! But hey, sitting through that lame ass cartoon did get me laid, so I'm not complaining.)

Anyway, I looked forward to "Pushing Tin", but wasn't impressed. Cusack as always was cool, but the overall message of "...Tin" seemed to be, "Hey look how cool Billy Bob Thornton is." Which of course, he isn't. I'll always give credit when it's due, "Sling Blade" for instance, or even his very funny role in the short lived TV series "Hearts Afire"...good stuff. But typically when a dude passes 40, starts wearing leather, doesn't shave and marries someone half his age we call that a mid life crisis, not cool.
