Aired
in New Zealand in
August/September last
year, finally decided to
actually watch it in one
hit the second time
because watching it once
a week was confusing the
hell out of me as to who
played who and when you
see the bottom of this
update, you'll see a
shitload of unknowns,
including a character
the makers just plain
forgot to credit even
though she was fairly
prominent in the last
two episodes. I'd like
to think she pulled her
name from the
production... (her
character has a sex
scene in the middle of a
drug deal, which is
surprisingly fucked up).
Basically, Land of the
Long Green Cloud is a
spin off from series 2
of Underbelly, but
instead of focusing on
Terry Clark (whose
character is in the
show), they focus on
Marty Johnstone (who
briefly appeared in A
Tale of Two Cities,
played by radio funnyman
Merrick Watts, should've
recast him, you'll see
why in a sec) and Andy
Maher. And basically
it's about who they
fucked during that time,
oh and a little bit of
stuff with drugs. In
fact, I'm pretty sure
Land of the Long Green
Cloud is a parody of
Underbelly because
everything that makes
Underbelly what it is,
is overdone so much that
they must be having a
laugh. Want slow motion?
Done. Want continuous
extremely brief flashes
of breasts? Double done.
How 'bout all business
deals in a strip club?
You better believe there
is. Want dialogue so bad
it hurts to repeat it?
We're not even trying
now...
I'm declaring Land of
the Long Green Cloud to
be an incredibly lazy
parody of Underbelly
because to call it a
drama is just taking the
piss. The minute the
show should get bogged
down with things like
plot and character
development, they throw
in a sex scene with the
neverending parade of
nude models and amateur
theatre players, surely
there isn't that many
actors/actresses in New
Zealand. There something
like 150+ characters in
6 episodes and there's
barely an actor that
have actual acting
careers in it (except
for Joel Tobeck, who
seems out of place
here). And then there's
the sense that this show
wants to show up
Australians. If you want
to have a go at us,
fine, but do so and move
on, why are you still
having a go at us in
episode 6? Now, we're
just laughing at you,
not with you. Sheesh.
But the thing that
amuses me the most about
Land of the Long Green
Cloud is that the only
female role with any
depth played by Holly
Shanahan (who is far and
away the best thing
about this series) looks
completely alien
compared to that
neverending parade of
nude models. And still
looks more gorgeous than
any of them...
