"Novel Desires", from Tuna
Tuna's Comments: Novel
Desires is pretty much an unknown film. I would
be tempted to call it soft core porn except for
two or three things. It does not star the usual B
bimbos, it has some decent acting and the plot
actually held some interest. It is essentially a
video romance novel about writing a romance
novel. A romance writer is having a bad hair day.
He is not getting along well with his live-in
girl friend, who is only interested in sex, and
wants him there 24/7, and he has writers block.
His editor teams him with a female writer with
whom he shares a mutual dislike in hopes that,
between the two of them, they will produce
something publishable. His best friend owns a
strip club/bar. As he and his female writing
partner think of story ideas, we see them acted
out. As you can see, there are lots of excuses
for nudity here, and they take advantage of every
one.
There is some depth,
however. The writer is tired of turning out
fluff, and wants to flesh out characters, add
realism, and write something of merit. His
reluctant writing partner writes hard core sex,
action and violence, probably to compensate for
being asexual and afraid to live. This is not a
bad film for its type, and would probably be as
good for women as men. The part of the anonymous
stripper is played by three different women

"Black
Rock", from Tuna
Tuna's Comments: Australian made Blackrock
(1997) is a powerful piece of film making, but
not easy to watch for two reasons. The first is
that the accent is very thick, and there is a lot
of teen slang. I found myself wanting sub-titles.
The second reason is the plot. The story is about
a bunch of surfers who get carried away at a
beach party, where one of the girls is gang raped
and murdered. One of the boys witnesses the rape,
but does nothing, and is then haunted by the
guilt. It doesn't help that his best friend is
the murderer. The film focuses on how everyone in
the small town deals with the tragedy. A sub-plot
provides the only nudity. The mother of the
witness has a breast biopsy near the beginning of
the film. I also included an image of his
girlfriend with a hint of a pokey.
Blackrock was featured at Sundance in 1997,
and was recently released on DVD.
