"Disappearing Acts" (2000)
Kind of hidden among next Tuesday's DVD releases is an HBO film called Disappearing Acts. I need to make a distinction between direct-to-cable, and made for HBO/Showtime/PBS. Some amazing talent is finding rewarding work with guaranteed distribution creating material for Premium Channels and PBS. That is not so say that direct-to-cable is always junk, but some are there only because they could not get a theatrical release.
Disappearing Acts is a very good Hollywood formula love story, and a little more. The couple, Wesley Snipes and Sanaa Lathan, are mainstream black culture, but from slightly different levels of society. She is educated, teaches music in a public school, and has dreams of becoming a recording star. She is tired of dating yuppie black men, and wants someone who will love her for her. Snipes is a construction worker, separated with two kids, who can't cross the color barrier and get into the union, so works only sporadically. He never graduated from High School, but has dreams of becoming a contractor. Lathan appeals to Snipes immediately, and he succeeds in showing her that he is a very nice man, and totally into her. There are several bumps in the relationship before the happy ending. All this, and it is told from the woman's point of view in a way that most men
will "get it."
The story is based on a book by Terry McMillan (How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Waiting to Exhale). Terry also produced. Gina Prince (Love and Basketball) directed. DP Tami Reiker did a marvelous job, as did art director Derrick Kardos. Lathan shows her nipples in a dark love scene with
Snipes, and has good cleavage and pokies. Frankly, she looks great even fully dressed. IMDB readers say 5.8/10. I enjoyed this film very much. Even though it is made for TV, and tells the story of a black relationship from the woman's point of view, I found it very accessible as a California
honkey. The messages are there, and provided a lot of insights, but they didn't get in the way of the love story. I am going to say B-. This is one you can watch with your significant other.

The Pledge is the detective film directed by Sean Penn, starring Nicholson. Penn did a great job, but the artistic, depressing, film struggled at the box office. No nudity.
The Garden of the Finzi-Continis is a beautifully photographed and poignant movie that won the Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Picture in 1971. It was
directed by Vittorio de Sica. Apart from Orson Welles and Chaplin, De Sica is the only guy I can think of who was both a great actor and a great performer. He acted in 166 movies, and directed 35, including one of the all-time top 100 (The Bicycle Thief). De Sica even went Welles one better, since he acted in multiple languages. Of course, one of the best things about the movie is Dominique Sanda, who challenges even Pfeiffer and Deneuve for pure beauty.
Spanish Judges is ... well ... it's a movie with Matthew Lillard as the psycho killer. 'Nuff said. Valeria Golino got naked. She isn't that young, her face isn't great, she can barely speak English, and she doesn't have the most womanly bosom, but nobody stays in better physical condition. She is a hardbody.

A couple of days ago, Spaz asked if we'd like to see some vidcaps from "Amor estranho Amor" -"Love, Strange Love" (1982). It's an ultra-rare Brazilian movie staring Xuxa Meneghel. Apparently she has been doing her best to keep it banned from US distribution.
Naturally, we said sure. Here are some details by Spaz:
Xuxa is Brazil's hottest property since Carmen Miranda and is considered South America's answer to Madonna. She has been a popular children's show hostess since the mid 1980s. Naturally it did not sit well when she posed nude for the December 1982 Brazilian edition of the bunnymag. She also starred in the Brazilian soft-porn movie "Love, Strange Love" (1982) which involved her in various states of undress. She tried to launch an English language version of her children show in the US in 1993 but the show was cancelled due to low ratings.
Notes about the movie, and the reason for banning distribution:
Xuxa's best nudity occurs when she is seducing an 11 year old boy! Since we would like to keep bringing the Fun House to you everyday, instead of sitting in jail with a new friend named "Bubba", you won't see those. But we can show you the tame pics, and we'll gladly tell you about the other scenes....
The popular children's TV show host has scenes an 11 year old feeling her up.
and...A scene with her completely nekkid, in bed, seducing the little guy.
Spaz also mentioned a scene with Vera Fischer in sex scene with the 11-year (she plays his mom!) at the end of the movie (after bitch-slapping Xuxa for trying to seduce him).
In another scene, the boy imagines himself humping a prostitute.
