"Vibration" (1968)

Vibration (Lejonsommar) (1968) is a Swedish art film whose main purpose was to show breasts and buns. Competition in this market was getting tough by 1968, but Radley Metzger knew how to get skin on the screen without losing to the censers. It is the story of a struggling author who summers at an artists colony on an island off the coast of Denmark. Sparse dialogue, and lots of close ups of body parts made for easy dubbing, which is marginally adequate. The author, played by Sven-Bertil Taube, falls instantly in lust with Margareta Sjödin, but dumps her rather quickly in favor of Essy Persson, an actress relaxing in the colony for the summer. Persson was Sweden's answer to Bardot, and has every bit as much sex appeal and acting ability.

Both women show breasts and buns, mostly outdoors. IMDB lists it, but doesn't even have enough votes for a rating. There is a good review at mondo-digital.com. The film is in B&W, and is chiefly interesting for the exposure from these two incredible women, and for it's place in the history of sex in cinema. It is a solid piece of late 60's European art house erotica. Based on this description, the film is a C.

    "Far from Home" (1989)

Far from Home (1989) stars a 14 year old Drew Barrymore as the daughter of divorced parents. She is on vacation with her dad, visiting National Parks (not her idea of fun), and is due to return home to LA for her 14th birthday, but gets stuck in a tiny Nevada town due to a gas shortage. She and her father end up renting a trailer from a very obnoxious Susan Tyrell (aka Susan Tyrrell) for the night. Drew is drawn to Tyrell's son, until he tries to rape her. At the start of the film, someone has shot the owner of a convenience store. Tyrell is electrocuted when someone throws a fan into her bath. Her son is the likely suspect, but that would be too easy an answer.

Barrymore shows lots of cleavage (an amazing amount for a 14 year old) throughout the film, but during the attempted rape and after, she is in a transparent wet t-shirt. We see Tyrell's breasts while she is being electrocuted. NOTE: I removed the blue filter that must have been applied post-production. Teri Weigel shows breasts in a very dark scene where Drew peeps through a trailer window and sees her having sex. We never see her face in the film. Jennifer Tilly has a small role as another traveler who is stranded due to the gas shortage. She has no exposure, but wears lacy, skimpy things. The exposure would be difficult to catch in a Video version, or at normal speed for that matter, but going frame by frame shows a lot of flesh.

Maltin holds his nose at 1 1/2 stars, IMDB readers say 5.4/10, and Rotten Tomatoes blew this one badly with three links that have nothing to do with this film. Some of those that commented at IMDB really enjoyed this. I think Maltin was a little harsh, and would call it a C.

Today I set my sights on "Highlander III: The Final Dimension" (1994). Of course, even though they said final it the the title, they lied and made another one anyway. The real question of course is this..."WHY GOD, WHY"???

Yes, I was and still am a Highlander fan. The series was pretty good, and the original is a cult favorite that I still find enjoyable today. Perhaps even more so now when I watch it in order to cleanse my brain after sitting through the "sequels".

Now as a fan I have a few thoughts as to why they made Highlander 3.

    Here it goes...
Part 2 is a well known embarrassment to everyone involved. Not only those who made it, but to anyone who has seen it. If anyone out there in Scoopy land can prove they actually enjoyed this movie, not only will I personally give you 100 bucks...but I'll also bonk you on the head with a shovel in hopes of knocking you back into reality. If that doesn't work, then I'll make sure you get the professional help you need.

So why was Highlander 3 made? Two possible reasons:

  • 1. As an apology to the loyal fans who loved the original so much that there was a consumer demand for a Highlander sequel and the creation of the TV series.
  • 2. To capitalize on the success of the series.

Now I'd love to believe that it was #1. But I don't have that much faith in Hollywood. Besides, if it had really been made for the fans...IT WOULD NOT HAVE SUCKED! Seriously Hollywood, we the viewers are no where near as dumb as you think we are! When someone dies or if there can be only one, then that's it! Game Over! We understand that, now why don't you?

    The review:
Basically Highlander is supposed to be the only one...But nooooo there is another bad guy who was suspended in time for a couple hundred years by magic or something. That's where it loses all hopes of being a quality film, and that's the first 5 minutes. After that it's Mario Van Peebles impersonating the Kurgan (and badly I might add) and doing a lot of magic tricks. My thoughts...why bother fighting the Highlander if you have these kinds of magical powers? Surely you could whip up all kinds money, become king of some country, have lots of power, etc. Or at the very least, do a kick ass show in Vegas and be loved by millions. Personally I think any of those options would be more fun than chasing Lambert around New York with a sword.

If it's a question of evil...then wouldn't it be more evil if you had all kinds of power over people. Make them do you bidding, worship you, etc. Why waste all that evil killing one guy. Especially if you can live forever! Think of all the evil you could spread out over a few hundred or few thousand years!

    Moving on to the 'caps:
I'd really like to say that these are my best work, but as we've learned from Highlander, that would be like saying 'there can be only one'...Obviously both lies.

The nudity comes from the lovely Deborah Kara Unger. She shows her breasts, bum, and a bit of bush, but all in a nasty "Blue Light Special" love scene. In some images I tried to balance out the colors, in others it was truly pointless. Like 'em or not, here they are. Try to enjoy.

    Penélope Cruz
    (1, 2, 3)

Great scans by Hugo from Esquire. Scoop made a good point today, and I agree... Much like Andie McDowell, Penélope looks better in movies than in still pictures. For both of them, stills allow too much focus on the lopsided elements of their faces, and don't catch their inner sparkle.

    Kari Wuhrer
    (1, 2, 3)

Kari showing off her plasti-boobs in "Terminal Justice" (1995). #1 has the best nudity as 2 and 3 are both kinda dark.

I haven't seen this one, but I really want to! It sounds like a perfect grade-Z movie with an all star cast...Kari and Lorenzo Lamas!

Sounds like a winner to me!

Film banned in France, but OK in Ottawa. Hey, the beaver is their national symbol...

From The Ottawa Citizen, 2 June 2001 by Jay Stone

A controversial film whose combination of explicit sex and violence managed to get it banned in its native France will open this month at the Mayfair, in Ottawa South. Baise-Moi -- the printable translation is Rape Me -- will be shown from June 22 to 27 and already Mayfair manager Tom Bergin is calling it "probably the most controversial film the Mayfair will ever play." It comes with the warning, "This film contains prolonged sex scenes of an extremely explicit nature and scenes of graphic violence, which some viewers may find shocking and disturbing."

Baise-Moi was initially banned in Ontario, but it was approved for release when the producers agreed to cut 13 seconds of an explicit rape scene. Robert Warren, chairman of the Ontario Film Review Board, said the movie cannot be screened in multiplexes or drive-in theatres because "we didn't want underage people sneaking into a film like this that had explicit sex in it." Mr. Warren said the movie can be shown only in single-screen theatres, such as the Mayfair, where the audience is easier to monitor. The Mayfair is usually the home of double-bills of recent mainstream films. The day before Baise-Moi opens, the theatre is showing Josie and the Pussycats and Joe Dirt. While Mr. Bergin acknowledges a "sudden change" in programming that week, he points out the theatre also shows such fare as Russ Meyer sexploitation movies and Japanese animated films that include sex and violence. They attract a younger audience to the Mayfair. "I don't know what kind of audience to expect" for Baise-Moi, he said, explaining that he decided to acquire the movie after he saw it did "pretty well" in Toronto and Montreal. The film was pulled in Quebec, however, after an angry viewer stormed the projection room and damaged the print.

Baise-Moi was made by two women, Coralie Trinh Thi, an adult film performer, and Virginie Despentes, who also wrote the novel on which the movie is based. It tells the story of two women, Manu and Nadine, played by French porn stars Rafaella Anderson and Karen Bach. After one of them is brutally gang-raped, they hit the road, murdering men and women. It contains many sex scenes, none of them simulated. The film has received mostly negative reviews. Lauren Mechling of the National Post called it an assemblage of hardcore rape and sex scenes, many of which end in murder with blood splattering onto walls, carpets and car hoods. She termed the film "nauseating."

Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times, however, noted, "As repellent as Baise-Moi is, it must be said that it is not mere pornography. Despentes and Trinh Thi prove to be skilled, dynamic filmmakers who imbue Nadine and Manu with psychological validity, and Baise-Moi moves fast, accompanied by an aptly hard-driving score."

The Mayfair, which rarely screens first-run films, will pair Baise-Moi with Beautiful Creatures, which Bergin describes as a cross between Thelma and Louise and Reservoir Dogs. It stars Rachel Weisz and Susan Lynch as two women who are terrorized by abusive boyfriends and who take their revenge in murder and kidnapping.

    The Funnies by Number 6
  • A group of girlfriends...
is on vacation when they see a 5-story hotel with a sign that reads: "For Women Only." Since they are without their boyfriends and husbands, they decide to go in.

The bouncer, a very attractive guy, explains to them how it works. "We have 5 floors. Go up floor by floor, and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It's easy to decide since each floor has a sign telling you what's inside."

So they start going up and on the first floor the sign reads: "All the men on this floor are short and plain." The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor.

The sign on the second floor reads: "All the men here are short and handsome." Still, this isn't good enough, so the friends continue on up.

They reach the third floor and the sign reads: "All the men here are tall and plain." They still want to do better, and so, knowing there are still two floors left, they continued on up.

On the fourth floor, the sign is perfect: "All the men here are tall and handsome." The women get all excited and are going in when they realize that there is still one floor left. Wondering what they are missing, they head on up to the fifth floor.

There they find a sign that reads: "There are no men here. This floor was built only to prove that there is no way to please a woman."
