"In Love and War" (1996)

In Love and War (1996) is a Richard Attenborough film about Ernest Hemingway's first love affair with a red cross nurse several years his senior in WW I Italy. The nurse, Agnes Kurowsky, played by Sandra Bullock, was one of hundreds of young nurses sent to Italy during the last year of the war to make up for the lack of US troops available for the Italian front. An 18 year old Hemingway (Chris O'Donnell) went to drive ambulances and hand out smokes in the canteens. Young Hemingway wanted to be in the action. When he took a backpack full of smokes to the front lines, the fox hole he was in got hit with a mortar. As he was stumbling to safety, he carried a seriously wounded Italian soldier with him, and was shot in the leg. It was in the hospital that he met Agnes (Aggie).

Despite regulations forbidding personal relationships with patients, she found young Hemingway irresistible. The chief surgeon at her hospital found her just as irresistible. She ends up making a series of poor choices. It is said that this failed affair haunted Hemingway his entire life. There is one sex scene, where Bullock has a nip slip, and shows her butt in a very dark scene.

Maltin says Bomb, but Berardinelli and Ebert are closer at 2 stars. The story is not without some interest, and Attenborough does his usual workmanlike job with the visuals, but the film has some serious problems to overcome, and doesn't quite make it. The set-up, just to get Hemingway and Kurowsky in the same room, takes 30 minutes, and the love affair is only the middle third of the film. It was saddled with the dread "Based on a True Story," which, in this case, meant an unhappy ending. C-.

    "Body Chemistry 4" (1995)

    Body Chemistry 4 (1995) is the most recent in the Body Chemistry series. The original was a B grade thriller, sort of a Fatal Attraction rip-off, with a premise that sort of worked. Claire Archer was a research Psychologist with a few kinks. She liked dangerous sex, including risk of getting caught, bondage, and a little pain. She had a sense of which men were also vulnerable to this approach, and chose married men. When she made their life hell, they tried to end the relationship, and Claire did them in. In the sequel, there was more nudity and less violence, but the theme was mostly intact. With the threequel, they transitioned to a pretty good softcore, but lost the dangerous sex aspect. With the fourth one, they had a chance to go out on a high note, but I guess they are going to keep trying to milk this bull forever.

    As the movie opens, they repeat the ending of number three, except that they add an eyewitness to her final two killings. Dr. Claire, who has morphed yet again into Shannon Tweed, is to be charged with murder. She hires the best defense attorney she can find, and seduces him. Same old story, he gets fed up and tries to break it off, Dr. Claire adds to her body count. The lawyers wife, Leslie Ryan shows breasts and buns, the first time in the series that Mrs. Victim gets naked. Tweed shows breasts, buns and a hint of bush.

    Had they convicted Dr. Claire, and maybe had the wife outsmart her, they could have made a good soft-core thriller/courtroom drama, and ended it with the best film of the four. IMDB readers say 3.5/10. I guess 3.5 is the maximum IQ you should have to enjoy this film. C-.

    Salvador was Oliver Stone's first significant film. James Woods was nominated for an Oscar in this movie about a gonzo journalist covering US hypocrisy in El Salvador. great DVD. The movie was low budget, and doesn't have the image quality of his later films, but it's a good 1.85 transfer, 25 minutes of deleted scenes (with quite a bit of nudity), full length commentary, and a one-hour documentary on the movie, featuring the real-life characters who are portrayed in the movie.


    The Blackout is an American version of a Eurotrash film, from Abel Ferrara. . Plenty of flesh. Plenty of sleaze. Kinda bad in the other food groups..

    From the Drudge Report, here's a photo of those idiot protesters in Sweden mooning Bush. The headline is that he laughed it off, and with asses like this, I'm not surprised. For people who love to lecture Americans about consuming too much, some of them have awfully wide cabooses themselves. Seems to me they would not be out of place in an Arkansas Wal-Mart, if they pulled on some stretch pants, that is.
