The Proposal
2009
Somewhat better than average romantic comedy. Pretty safe date movie, with
enough laughs to keep you guys from getting bored. It scores 50% at Rotten
Tomatoes, which is quite respectable for the genre, since most critics are not
fans of rom-coms.
There are exceptions, of course. The top-rated rom com of all time at RT is The
Philadelphia Story, with 100%, followed by Annie Hall at 98%. Two of my
favorites, It Happened One Night and Manhattan, come in at #6 and #4
respectively. My other favorite, The Tao of Steve, the only romantic comedy
that tells the whole truth, just misses the elite group with 80% positive
reviews. Other post-1970 films to place high on the rom-com chart: Four Weddings and a Funeral,
About a Boy, Hannah and her Sisters, Splash, When Harry Met Sally, Moonstruck,
and High Fidelity.
I guess the top two at IMDb would be Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and
Amelie. I suppose those must be romantic comedies, since I don't know what
else to call them. Whatever they are, they are both great movies which deserve
a shout-out!
Nudity
The Proposal includes a modest nude scene from Sandra Bullock and Ryan
Reynolds, despite a PG-13 rating. The Blu-Ray version should have a couple of
additional revealing moments which can't really be seen in this cam version.
(Check the reflection in the glass, for example, and watch Bullock when they
crash together).

Killing Ariel
2008
Spanning a period from 1933 to the present,
this 2008 supernatural horror is full of surprises, and very good.
When Rick was a child in 1933, he watched his mother kill herself over
guilt for having repeated sex with a naked demon, while Rick's father was
wheelchair-bound with polio. Dreams of the demon continue to haunt Rick to
adulthood.
In the 70's, Rick is happily married with
children, but succumbs to temptation and takes beautiful young Ariel (Axelle
Cummings) to a getaway at the mountain home that he had inherited from his
father. A weekend of great sex follows, but so do strange nightmares and
visions, and during one of them, Rick shoots what he thinks is the naked
demon, only to realize he has accidentally killed Ariel. Panicking, he
buries Ariel on the grounds, but she is soon back in his bed, all in one
piece. Now, Rick realizes that Ariel is in fact a she-demon, so he sets
about killing her again, seven times in fact.
Now present-day, Rick is in a mental hospital
for the criminally insane, and the doctor has some nasty surprises in
store for him.
The horror part of this is the killings, some
of which are pretty gruesome, but for the most part, this is a twisty
supernatural tale that is surprisingly well done. It's a shame it hasn't
gotten more press, because it really is good.
