"Cuarteto de La Habana"

Cuarteto de La Habana (1999), or Havana Quartet, is a romantic comedy shot mainly in Havana. Ernesto Alterio is a struggling jazz musician in Madrid. His group is refusing to play because he can't pay them, he is about to be evicted, and his girlfriend turns up pregnant. To top it all off, his grandmother dies. He finds a hidden spot in her floor, and discovers letters and a tape from his mother in Havana, so off he goes to find her. On the plane, he meets flight attendant Javier Cámara, who tells him that he is to marry a girl from a very good family in Havana.

When Ernesto arrives at the house, whom should he spot but Cámara, who is engaged to his incredibly hot supposed sister, Laura Ramos. It soon seems clear that nobody is overly concerned with the truth in this house. Cámara has told them he is a pilot, and Ramos is being pushed into marrying him because of his money. That is the same reason Ramos's mother claimed to be Ernesto's mother. They thought he was rich. In actuality, she was his mother's best friend. The attraction between Ramos and Ernesto is obvious, as are the problems between Ramos and Cámara. So, who will marry whom?

We have frequent exposure including full-frontal from the fiery Cuban actress Laura Ramos. It is not the plot that I enjoyed here, but rather the characters and the performances, but I enjoyed it very much. IMDB readers have it at 7.2 of 10. There are no reviews available, and it can only be found on Region 2 DVD. It is one of the more enjoyable romantic comedies I have seen this year. B-.

    "No te fallaré"

    No te fallaré (2001), or I Won't Let You Down, is based on a popular TV series, kind of a Spanish Beverly Hills 90210, called Compañeros (schoolmates). It is three years after graduation, and the group is still recovering from the emotional damage caused when one of the group jumped off a cliff and missed the water, leaving him severely disabled. The story centers around Valle (Eva Santolaria) who is working as a go-go dancer. Her life gets far too interesting when she kicks a club patron who is fondling her while dancing, and he turns out to be a big Mafia head. She hides with her old sweetheart, Quimi (Antonio Hortelano), but he has a life and a girlfriend, so she ends up with the crooked club owner of the place where she works.

    From there, we have drug double-crosses, murders, lots of chase scenes, and a lot of other noisy jumble. Santolaria shows her breasts in two dark sex scenes. This is only available in Spanish Region 1, but does have subtitles. IMDB readers say 4.9 of 10, which is about the right score. This was obviously made to sell to the fans of the series, and is pretty much teen junk. D. On the plus side, Santolaria is easy on the eyes.

    The Royal Tenenbaums is a bittersweet, highly acclaimed comedy about a dysfunctional Manhattan family of child prodigies and their scheming, manipulative, truth-impaired father. Not for everyone, but if you're one of the people that "gets it", you will think it's one of the best movies you've ever seen.

    Kei Mizutani is the Japanese equivalent of Shannon Tweed or Monique Gabrielle: she appeared in a bunch of movies over a six or seven year span and also posed nekkid for a series of books, magazines and calendars. Tuna capped one of her movies, "Sumo Vixens", a few months ago. I stuck the individual frames into theme-based collages. First one has Kei dressed in sumo garb, the second has ber in the shower and the third has her kinda, sorta wrestling. All show Kei's impressive boobs (all the more impressive for the fact that she is Japanese, where all women are beautiful but most stop growing around the age of 12), the second shows bum as well.

    Children's Host Blocks Nude Photos

    RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) - Lawyers for a popular children's television hostess stopped a bookstore from auctioning photo negatives of her posing nude.

    The Universal bookstore canceled Thursday's auction of 12 slides showing Xuxa naked after her lawyers warned the images belonged to her and the negatives belonged to the photographer, store manager Roberto Menezes said.

    Menezes said he stopped the auction to avoid further problems.

    The photos were shot by the late photographer Indalecio Wanderley for the now-defunct men's magazine Status-Plus in 1981.

    At the beginning of her career, the 39-year-old Xuxa, whose real name is Maria da Graca Meneghel, posed for several magazines including Brazilian Playboy.

    Xuxa's lawyers also succeeded in banning further exhibitions of an erotic film in which she appeared in the early 1980s.
