Although this movie is relatively obscure and not especially well respected, it was made by the distinguished auteur Louis Malle in the period between his two much-honored masterpieces: Atlantic City (7.5 and five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture); and Au Revoir Les Infants (8.1, four BAFTA nominations including a win for Best Director, three Cesar wins including Best Picture, and an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay).

Malle is also the director of Pretty Baby, the notorious film with pre-pubescent nudity from Brooke Shields.
