"Love Object"

Love Object (2003) is a rare commodity, an original horror film. Not only that, but it is an interesting story and is well acted. Kenneth (Desmond Harrington) is a socially inept tech writer. He writes those operator manuals for home electronics that nobody reads. He is a natural sucker for a Nikki, a $10,600.00 made to order lifelike sex doll. Predictably, he is smitten and obsessive, but he is given a nearly impossible task at work, and Lisa (Melissa Sagemiller) is assigned as his word processor. He falls for her, but as a hard time explaining his actions to Nikki, who retaliates by chaining him to the bed, cutting up his notes, etc.

He and Lisa become an effective team, and then inseparable, which eventually leads to sex. He puts Nikki out of his life, but Lisa finds out about Nikki and reacts badly. Kenneth is fired due to the conflict, and decides he needs to turn Lisa into a plastic doll. Sagemiller shows a breast, and buns. The final breast shot could well be a double, but I doubt it based on the other exposure.

The film won an award at the Woodstock Film Festival and is currently 6.3 at IMDb. Ebert was less than enthusiastic at 2 stars, but other critics liked its originality and acting. All in all, it was a very good film considering the $1M budget and the genre. This is a C+. If you like horror, this is a very good one, although it is not at all scary. IT could have been way over the top, but is more restrained and believable.

    "Hell High"

Hell High (1989) is a teen slasher by one time director Harold Grossman. It is, in many ways, a very good genre effort, but came when slasher films were completely out of style, and were even being censored in several states. It centers around 4 misfit students, a jock, a nerd, a psycho misfit and a slut. In the prelude to the film, a little girl causes the impalement of two teenagers who chose her playhouse in the swamp to neck.

Cut to 18 years in the future. The science teacher is not very tightly wrapped, and takes valium to deal with the problem kids. We later learn that she was the little girl in the opening. The four misfits are lead by the psycho (Christopher Stryker). The slut is played by Millie Prezioso, the fat nerd by Jason Brill, and the jock by soap star and former Armanie model Christopher Cousins. The science teacher was played by another soap star, Maureen Mooney. Mooney shows buns, Karen Russell, as the teen girl in the opening sequence shows breasts, and we have two sets of stunt boobs for Mooney and Prezioso.

The film is interesting for several reasons. The first is that it is not very predictable. Second, they drive a teacher crazy, and third, nobody is a sympathetic character. There is one crash with explosion that required a stunt team and is very well done. The DP was a young Stephan Fierberg, whose credits include Secretary, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4, and Kingpin.

IMDb has this at 3.8 of 10, and the critics of the day universally hated it. We are seeing it now courtesy of Joe Bob Briggs, who does a very interesting scene by scene commentary, and gave us a new rule of horror, a character can never be assumed to be dead unless they are pierced by metal or incinerated. Further, any character who rolls down a ravine is not dead. Despite the bad press, this is a C as a perfectly good slasher film (Is good slasher film an oxymoron?) that was simply made 8 years too late on a total budget of $188K.

NOTE: because of a unique combination of circumstances with the Windows media player and some substantial bandwidth theft, we will have to do all of our movie files in zip format. Left click on the files as you normally would to view a picture. When you get a choice, click on "save", and put it on your hard drive in the directory of your choice. UnZIP and play from there.

I know this is not especially convenient, but it allows the film clips to continue. I can protect .zip files from hot-linking in the same way I can protect still images. For some reason, if I protect .avis and .wmvs from hot-linking, they will not play in the Windows media player, and I can't get a satisfactory work-around. Perhaps I will find a better solution, but for now this new policy allows you to continue getting the movie clips you want to see, which is much preferable to my abandoning the clips altogether.

Perhaps these tips will help if you have trouble with the codecs for these movies:

    Shiloh says:

FYI when I hypercam vids to make the file size smaller I use DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion for the video compressor, then I use virtualdub to compress the audio. The properties for the vids says the video codec:  DivX Decoder Filter & audio codec:  Morgan Stream Switcher which I'm not familiar with. When I compress the audio with virtualdub I use MPEG Layer-3.  A friend of mine told me about compressing the audio about (6) mos. ago. Like I said previously, only been capping for a year & a half & I'm no expert. Hopefully this info will help members with the proper codecs for my vids.

When I cap big brother's I use hypercam mostly & sdp & asfrecorder if the set up allows me. I stopped using camtasia cause the file sizes were always too big, could never figure out the process, over my head lol, plus it cost too much to buy in my opinion.

    A reader says:

You mentioned that some users were having trouble with the videos on your site. There is a tool designed to determine what codec is needed for a video. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ Hope this is useful to you or your users.

    Scoop says:

I made the .wmv versions of each video. The codecs for these: Windows Video V8, Windows Audio 9. The upside of these is that you know the codecs, and they'll play in the Windows Media Player. The downside is that they are slightly larger, and slightly lower quality.

Four paparazzi things (if all goes well I will have a couple of avi's a bit later in the game).

Theme for the day is gals wearing black shirts and no bras. Very different-sized gals at that.

Angela Dodson, who I am told plays the character Molly in Joe Schmo. I learned two things about that show when I Googled Ms. Dodson: a) It is a spoof of reality shows rather than a real reality show. Who woulda guessed?; b) It's on Spike TV, the 33rd channel for men. Angela says she'll never pose nekkid 'cuz it would embarass her grandma. Uh-huh. Lessee what happens when her fifteen minutes are up.

    "The Butterfly Effect"
Suppose if you didn't like the way your life was going, you could simply read a journal of a major event in your past, and change everything. That's the premise of this excellent 2004 Sci-Fi. It's been called a time-travel movie, and it is, but it's actually more of a CHANGE time movie.

As a young man grows up, he experiences blackouts. He keeps daily journals to try to fill in the gaps. Then, he discovers that by focusing on a blackout period, he can actually change a disturbing event. What he doesn't count on is the drastic and unpredictable ways it will change his future.

This is an excellent, edge-of-your-seat thriller with tons of twists and turns, and a dynamite and unexpected (and very sad) ending. This is one movie I'm really glad I didn't miss.
