"Fear City"

Fear City (1984) is one of my early projects, and I really hated it the first time I watched it. Here is what I said at the time. "(Fear City) is every bit as bad as Scoopy said it was. Cliche City would have been a more appropriate title. I can't find a single good thing to say about it. Every character was obnoxious, from the gangsters to the strippers on drugs to the night club owners to the cops. Some of the New York at night photography would have been good had the DVD transfer not been so terrible.

"The exposure in this one all comes from strippers, both known and unknown. Melanie Griffith, by the way, should have used a double for the stripping - she looks fine but has no ability at stripping, and Rae Dawn Chong wasn't much better. Please lord, let my next project be worth watching."

I have now seen many far worse films, which gives me a certain prospective. Yes, this film is cliche ridden, and nothing would have fixed that. We have the good hearted stripper, the boxer who quit the ring after his opponent died, but who has always worked for the mob, the police detective who hates Guinies and other lowlifes, and the psycho kung fu slasher. The ex fighter was a former sweetheart of the hooker with a heart of gold, who is now happily sleeping with another woman, but still has feelings for him.

When someone starts ripping strippers, the mafia head and the detective both think it is a gang war, but we know better, as they chose to let the audience in on the mystery in the first five minutes, and this was the critical mistake that kept the film from being watchable. Since we know who the killer is, and have a good idea what motivates him from the beginning, we are not suckered into believing the mob warfare angle. They should have withheld the identity of the killer from the audience until near the end of the film. There is a rather effective moment when the ex fighter has finally decided to personally kick some ass, and is shadow boxing in a cheap hotel room, while the killer is practicing kung fu in his room. Knowing the killer's identity before this point did nothing except kill all possibility of suspense. The genre cliches totally dictate the ending. The hooker's girlfriend will have to die, the fighter will have to regain his will to fight, the hooker with a heart of gold will have to be attacked, and the ex fighter will have to save her in a final showdown with the slasher. Thus, leading us on with the mob war theory is the only shot at suspense and therefore dramatic tension.

The film has enough T & A both from credited stars and unknown strippers to qualify as a T & A film. IMDb readers have it at 4.6 of 10. This is decidedly not one of Abel Fererra's best films, and I think demonstrates that he was more interested in seeing tits than making an effective film. He checkered career includes The Bad Lieutenant on one side, and the Hard core ( Lives of a Wet Pussycat on the other end of the spectrum. This is a D-, but could have been a C if they had reshot two slashing scenes and re-edited to withhold the killers identity from the audience.

    "Four Rooms"

Four Rooms (1995) should have been a funny, entertaining film. Quentin Tarantino Directed ad wrote one of the segments, and the cast included Sammi Davis, Valeria Golino, Madonna, Alicia Witt, Jennifer Beals, Antonio Banderas, Salma Heyek, Marisa Tomie, Tim Roth and Bruce Willis. It is four loosely related vignettes all taking place on New Years eve, where Tim Roth is the only bellboy on duty. The film had two main problems. First, the Tim Roth character was so obnoxious that I hated every minute he was on screen. Second, although the situations were outrageous (and somewhat Tarantinoesque), none of them were funny.

In the first segment, a cover of witches gather in the honeymoon suite to bring back their goddess. Ione Skye lets the coven down by not bringing her item for the potion, which was supposed to be semen. She has one hour to milk the bellboy. This is the most entertaining segment, but not because of the writing. Ione Skye and Sammi Davis spend a full ten minutes dancing around topless. In segment two, Roth goes into the wrong room, and runs into a crazy man with a gun, who has his wife bound and gagged, and intimidates Roth. Segment three has Banderos paying the bellhop to watch his two monster kids, and in the last skit one man has bet his pinky against another man's car that he can light his Zippo ten times in a row. Roth is to execute the punishment.

IMDb readers have this at 5.9 of 10, and it recouped its $4Meg budget. Madonna earned a Razzie for her portrayal of a lesbian witch. Ebert and Berardinelli are in perfect agreement at 2 stars. I found it painful to watch, and can't recommend it, yet the 5.9 is the bottom end of watchable. The proper score is low C-.

  • Shiloh

    Words from Scoop.

    .avi's from Shiloh.

.wmv files made by Scoop from Shiloh's .avi's.

NOTE: because of a unique combination of circumstances with the Windows media player and some substantial bandwidth theft, we will have to do all of our movie files in zip format. Left click on the files as you normally would to view a picture. When you get a choice, click on "save", and put it on your hard drive in the directory of your choice. UnZIP and play from there.

I know this is not especially convenient, but it allows the film clips to continue. I can protect .zip files from hot-linking in the same way I can protect still images. For some reason, if I protect .avis and .wmvs from hot-linking, they will not play in the Windows media player, and I can't get a satisfactory work-around. Perhaps I will find a better solution, but for now this new policy allows you to continue getting the movie clips you want to see, which is much preferable to my abandoning the clips altogether.

    Butterfly Kiss

Odd movie starring the always odd Amanda Plummer. (Review)

Perhaps these tips will help if you have trouble with the codecs for these movies:

    Shiloh says:

FYI when I hypercam vids to make the file size smaller I use DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion for the video compressor, then I use virtualdub to compress the audio. The properties for the vids says the video codec:  DivX Decoder Filter & audio codec:  Morgan Stream Switcher which I'm not familiar with. When I compress the audio with virtualdub I use MPEG Layer-3.  A friend of mine told me about compressing the audio about (6) mos. ago. Like I said previously, only been capping for a year & a half & I'm no expert. Hopefully this info will help members with the proper codecs for my vids.

When I cap big brother's I use hypercam mostly & sdp & asfrecorder if the set up allows me. I stopped using camtasia cause the file sizes were always too big, could never figure out the process, over my head lol, plus it cost too much to buy in my opinion.

    A reader says:

You mentioned that some users were having trouble with the videos on your site. There is a tool designed to determine what codec is needed for a video. http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ Hope this is useful to you or your users.

    Scoop says:

I made the .wmv versions of each video. The codecs for these: Windows Video V8, Windows Audio 9. The upside of these is that you know the codecs, and they'll play in the Windows Media Player. The downside is that they are slightly larger, and slightly lower quality.

    'Caps and comments by Spaz:

"Show Me Yours": episode It's My Party
It's not Rachel Wilson nude in the opening credits but this week's guest star.

    "Naked Josh": episode Celibacy
Finally some nudity after a dry spell.

    "Bliss" episode Nina's Muse
    First episode of season two.

    • Thea Gill: topless humping a gay guy (don't ask).

    "Queer as Folk": episode 4.12
Former child star Meredith Henderson has a more risque guest starring role. In this episode her boyfriend gets his hand up her shirt, takes off her panties but stops just before they have sex. No nudity.

    "Alienated": episode Pass the Saltpeter
In this episode everybody gets horny. No nudity.

    "Heaven Before I Die"
Light drama about a Charlie Chaplin impersonator.

    "The Uncles"
Light comedy drama about making babies but no one can't figure out how.

    "Open Season"
Black comedy spoofing the Nielson rating system. Watching this movie may explain the rating success of American Idol.

    Oz
    'Caps and comments by Oz:

    "Sunshine State"
Showing her age is Edie Falco in Sunshine State. No nudity but she's in a state of undress.

    • Edie Falco (1, 2)

    "Playing Dangerous"
Ali Patrick is also in a state of undress in Playing Dangerous.

    • Ali Patrick (1, 2)

    "The Drew Carey Show"
Some pokies by Katy Selverstone from an early episode of The Drew Carey Show.

    "Lone Star State of Mind"
No nudity by Jaime King, just an upskirt and a lot of tease.

    • Jaime King (1, 2, 3)

    "The Pirate Movie"
The Pirate Movie has a reputation of being one of the worst Australian movies of all time. It's bad but it is not the worst I've seen. Kristy McNicol is the obligatory American female lead. No nudity but there are some sexy shots of her and some slight pokies.

    • Kristy McNicol (1, 2, 3, 4)

"Real World Movie - The Lost Season"
Real World Movie - The Lost Season is a mediocre reality-type movie with a bit of Blair Witch and The Hole thrown in. Unfortunately, the nudity by Laura Jordan is blurred out and we have to be content with pokies and underwear.

    • Laura Jordan (1, 2, 3, 4)

    "Cheats"
Another teen flick is Cheats and we see Maggie Lawson in her underwear.

    "Brief Crossing"
Brief Crossing is the story of a middle-aged English woman and a French teenager on an overnight trip across the English Channel. They have a one night stand during which Sarah Pratt shows everything.

    "Fuzz"
No nudity in Fuzz, just some low quality caps of a stripper, and Raquel Welch is seen in an industrial-strength bra.

    "She's the One"
Plenty of great pokies by Jennifer Aniston and Maxine Bahns in She's the One. I'm waiting for Jennifer Aniston and Hugh Grant to make a movie together - they can both act in only one type of movie.

    • Jennifer Aniston (1, 2, 3)
    • Maxine Bahns (1, 2)

    "Predator"
More pokies by Elpidia Carillo in the Arnie movie Predator. I thought it was quite good for the genre but it didn't need a sequel.

    • Elpidia Carillo (1, 2)

    "V Graham Norton"
There were some caps of Jennifer Tilly on Graham Norton's show in Saturday's Fun House, but these caps of Jennifer are from V Graham Norton a couple of years ago. Again we see her lovely cleavage but also her left breast was slightly see-through under the studio lights. It didn't quite come out in the caps unless you use your imagination.

    "The Near Room"
Plenty of naked flesh in The Near Room. The full frontal nudity comes from an unnamed porn star on a TV. Julie Graham is naked but we don't see everything and Mandie Ross is wearing an interesting get up.

    "The Man from Elysian Fields"
There's some pokies by Anjelica Huston in The Man from Elysian Fields, although given her age I don't know how much is real. Julianna Margulies looks very nice in her outfit.

    Variety
Christina Applegate "Anchorman" co-star Christina Applegate looking lovely on Conan.

Kate Beckinsale The "Van Helsing" babe looking gorgeous wearing a swimsuit in a Diet Coke ad.

Lindsay Lohan The now 18 year old 'it girl' almost showing off a full side breast view while out on the town.

    Pam Anderson
    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)

Señor Skin 'caps of Pammy gettin' it on in her other stolen sex tape. This time she's with the frontman for the 80's hair-band Poison, Bret Michaels.
