"Fast Times at Ridgemont High"

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) is a Fun House favorite, and my images were a early effort. Hopefully this will be an upgrade. This is one of the absolute classic teen films in the vein of Animal House, American Graffiti, Americna Pie, etc. It features Sean Penn's most recognizable character, and arguably his best performance. Unlike many films in this genre, most of the performers look like they could be in High School, with the possible exception of Judge Reinhold. Phoebe Cates was shy about showing her breasts, but Jennifer Jason Lee was completely comfortable with her nudity, and in fact wanted to go further. The original pool room sex scene was much more explicit, and included male full frontal, but the studio censored to save the MPAA the trouble. It is a shame this additional footage has never been made available. The cast included a very young Nick Cage.

Cates shows breasts in a Reinhold fantasy scene, and Leigh is completely nude, but keeps her bush hidden. IMDb readers have this at 7.1. The music wasn't to my personal taste, but it was appropriate to the period being portrayed. If any of you are not familiar with this film, Scoop's review is both detailed and informative. This film is a B, both funny and honest, with a young cast, most of whom went on to huge careers.

    "Excalibur"

    Excalibur (1981) is John Boorman's telling of the Arthurian legend. It is full of typical Boorman elements, including gorgeous scenery, great photography, and nudity. I personally have problems with two elements of the film. The first is that Nicol Williamson playing Merlin just did not seem wizardlike. The second is that way too much of the armor looked like highly polished stainless steel. I could have bought magic armor for Lancelot, but not most of the nights. Helen Mirren was perfect as the evil Morgana, Katrine Boorman, John's daughter, looked great as Igrayne and Cherie Lunghi was an effective Guenevere.

    The film is a favorite among SCA and Ren Faire folks, and is an effective portrayal of the nights of the round table, the quest for the Holy grail, and the romance between Lancelot and Guenevere. It seemed in this version that most of the men were victims, and women were the real villains. Mirren shows breasts through a large mesh top, and Boorman and Lunghi both show breasts and buns. IMDb readers have it at 7.4. I found it a little long at 140 minutes, but it is worth the watch. It was nominated for an Oscar for cinematography and a host of other nominations. This is a C+. If sword and sorcery or the Arthurian legend appeal to you, you will like this one.

    NOTE: because of a unique combination of circumstances with the Windows media player and some substantial bandwidth theft, we will have to do all of our movie files in zip format. Left click on the files as you normally would to view a picture. When you get a choice, click on "save", and put it on your hard drive in the directory of your choice. UnZIP and play from there.

    I know this is not especially convenient, but it allows the film clips to continue. I can protect .zip files from hot-linking in the same way I can protect still images. For some reason, if I protect .avis and .wmvs from hot-linking, they will not play in the Windows media player, and I can't get a satisfactory work-around. Perhaps I will find a better solution, but for now this new policy allows you to continue getting the movie clips you want to see, which is much preferable to my abandoning the clips altogether.

    FYI when I hypercam vids to make the file size smaller I use DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion for the video compressor, then I use virtualdub to compress the audio. The properties for the vids says the video codec:  DivX Decoder Filter & audio codec:  Morgan Stream Switcher which I'm not familiar with. When I compress the audio with virtualdub I use MPEG Layer-3.  A friend of mine told me about compressing the audio about (6) mos. ago. Like I said previously, only been capping for a year & a half & I'm no expert. Hopefully this info will help members with the proper codecs for my vids.
     
    When I cap big brother's I use hypercam mostly & sdp & asfrecorder if the set up allows me. I stopped using camtasia cause the file sizes were always too big, could never figure out the process, over my head lol, plus it cost too much to buy in my opinion.

    I made the .wmv versions of each video. The codecs for these: Windows Video V8, Windows Audio 9. The upside of these is that you know the codecs, and they'll play in the Windows Media Player. The downside is that they are slightly larger, and slightly lower quality.
