weekend.
Movies 'n' Stuff:
In order to avoid being 12 hours late, I'm postponing my images from
Storytelling and Piniero one more day. There is plenty to look at today from
the other contrinbutors. Tuna has Dominique Swain topless, for example!
Storytelling (new to
DVD) is the alleged comedy from Todd Solondz.
Impostor (new to DVD)
is a heavily padded S/F film starring Gary Sinese, from a Philip K Dick short
story. A great waste of potential.
Piņero is the offbeat biopic
of the hip post-beatnik poet/playwright Miguel Piņero. It gave Benjamin Bratt a
chance to prove he is an actor, but the film itself, as Piņero might have said,
is a tale of sound and fury, signifying nada, daddy-o.

A couple of days ago, various sources reported that Sesame Street would
introduce a HIV+ muppet. (I thnk the correct info is that it is only in the
South African version, is a woman, and not gay, but it has been widely
misreported otherwise. In some parts of South Africa, 40 percent of women of
child-bearing age are infected with HIV, and in 2000, about 40 percent of
adult deaths in South Africa were attributed to AIDS, according to the U.S.
State Department). Needless to say,

"New Best Friend"
New Best Friend (2002) is a girl from the wrong side of the tracks tries to fit
in with the beautiful people story. The setting is a southern college, and, as
the film starts, Mia Kirshner, the girl, is in a coma caused by an overdose of
cocaine. The investigating officer is a black temporary chief who is expected to
investigate to keep the mother quiet, but not make any waves. The entire film is
flashbacks showing how Kirshner was paired with one of the in crowd for a school
project. They took her in, cleaned her up, and introduced her to their friends.
They also taught her about sex and drugs.
Dominique Swain as one of the girls shows her breasts during and after a lesbian
scene with Kirshner, and again at the end of the film, waking up with a man and
a woman, in what was originally intended to be the title sequence at the
beginning of the film. It didn't matter where you stuck the nude scene, nothing
could help this film. What is supposed to be a mystery thriller is neither
mysterious nor thrilling, and is not even a good character exploration of these
southern bell coeds. Reviews are universally bad, and IMDB readers say 4.6 of
10. The film does look very good, with a Spanish Moss draped campus and good set
decoration in interiors. What a shame they couldn't come up with a story to make
the technical achievement worthwhile. C-

"The Harrad Experiment"
The Harrad Expirement (1973) is based on a Robert Rimmer book of the same name
that was a best seller on the USS Ranger in 1967 among the liberal triple digit
IQ sailors, for two good reasons. It is full of graphic sex, and describes group
marriage, and dares to suggest that monogamy is not only not the only possible
relationship, but is not really even a good one. Remember the era. This was the
sexual freedom, everyone is on the pill, nobody wears bras pre-herpes and
pre-aids days of unlimited sexual freedom. The book suggested that this "free
love" might even be a great social idea.
Harrad was a college enrichment program begun by husband/wife psychologists.
Students from a nearby college were to live at Harrad with a roommate of the
opposite sex, carefully chosen by the doctors, and take extra classes in
sexuality and relationships. The book focuses on the inter-relationships of a
dozen or so students, and progresses from initial meetings and uncertainty,
through "fuck weekend," when most of the students became intimate with their
room-mates, through some jealousy and swapping, and ends with five couples going
through a rather carefully worded group marriage ceremony, after learning that
they were better as a group than as singles or couples.
I was eager to see the film, and couldn't imagine that it could portray all of
the sex and intimacy in the book. It didn't. Further, the first version I saw
was in terrible condition, and full of jump cuts obviously made to take out
nudity. I have tried several versions since, only to find them cut and terrible
transfers. Then, I got my shipment from Australia, and the Region 4 version is 5
minutes longer than the longest version I had yet seen, and is a good Widescreen
transfer. There are still a couple of bad jump cuts where tits should have been,
but some of the nudity is intact in this version. So, now that I have seen the
film in something close to its real version, how is it? Well, they made Harrad a
college unto itself, simplifying the settings, and focused on 3 couples. It is
true to the spirit of the book, except that each of the 6 main characters
overcomes some personal hang-up and becomes a more complete person, but there is
only the slightest hint of polygamous relationships. All in all, it is a pretty
good film, albeit one that may not make sense to someone who didn't live through
the sexual revolution of the middle 60s.
James Whitmore and Tippi Hedren played Drs. Margaret and Phillip Tenhausen,
founders. We see Tippi in a bra and panties teaching a student a lesson with a
swift kick to the ego. Couple number one is Laurie Walters and Bruce Kirby Jr.
He is a young swinger with lots of notches on his bedpost, who runs from
commitment and intimacy. She is a shy and introspective virgin looking for true
love and fulfillment. Not hard to see why they were paired. Walters has the most
exposure in the film, showing breasts in three scenes, one in bed, one in a
swimming pool and one in a bathtub. We can also see the dark shadow of her pubic
hair in the pool.
Couple 2 consist of the outgoing and sexually experienced Victoria Thompson, and
inexperienced Don Johnson, who has self-image problems. We get brief glimpses of
her breasts in a sex scene and a pool scene.
Couple 3, Sharon Taggart and Elliott Street are mostly there as plot devices for
the other couples, but Street has a small weight problem which makes it hard for
him to adjust to the nudity requirement during exercise, and Taggart is what is
commonly called easy. We see most of her breasts in the pool, as well as her
buns, and she has a lengthy scene in a bra and panties with Kirby.
The dialogue and attitudes are very 60's, as is the costuming. With more freedom
from the censors, a much better film could have been made (it's too bad it
wasn't made 5 years later) but it is still a very good effort. It is essentially
a character driven drama, and I ended up liking all of the characters. This film
is a very high C+, but only in the uncut version. Watch for a brief appearance
by Melanie Griffith as an uncredited extra at the ripe old age of 16.

Scoop's note: this is still the censored version. I don't see any flesh in
these caps that was not in the 90 minute VHS version or the region 1 91 minute
DVD, which I have at my arms' reach.version, although the quality represents a
significant upgrade.
When you find the uncensored version (if any prints still exist), you'll know
it!!! The nudity is not subtle. Here is an example of
Laurie Walters in the uncensored
version. There was also substantial male frontal nudity from future stars like
Don Johnson and Bruno Kirby.
