"The General's Daughter"

The General's Daughter (1999) is a German produced whodunnit directed by Simon West. A female Captain, and daughter of a popular retiring General and Vice Presidential hopeful is found tied spread eagle to tent stakes, and is presumed raped and dead. John Travolta is a warrant officer who woks as a CID investigator who is assigned to the case along with ex flame Madeleine Stowe. The fact that Travolta is a Warrant officer rather than a college graduate officer like those he is investigating is important. He has little respect for the snooty college wiz kids. Stowe is a rape councilor and rape investigator. It is immediately obvious that the investigation has serious political overtones, and that the death wasn't what it first seemed.

The Army did not cooperate, which meant that all of the military vehicles and costumed extras had to be paid for, so the $60M budget was stretched to the limit, but you would never know it to watch the film. Before the investigation reaches its conclusion, the film is littered with skeletons falling out of the closet, and it is a none to subtle indictment of the good old boy network of career military men. Your enjoyment of the film will have a lot to do with how much you like Travolta's performance. Leslie Stefanson plays the title role, and does full frontal as a corpse and breasts in a rape scene.

IMDb readers have this at 6.1 of 10. Ebert has it at 2 1/2 stars and Berardinelli awarded 3. I side more with Berardinelli on this one. It was a pretty fair whodunnit with lots of twists and turns, some in depth character development, more than a little humor (mainly from Travolta's character) and some serious themes having to do with Military secrecy and the treatment of women in the military. I enoyed this very much, but often like whodunnits. This is a C+.

    NOTE: because of a unique combination of circumstances with the Windows media player and some substantial bandwidth theft, we will have to do all of our movie files in zip format. Left click on the files as you normally would to view a picture. When you get a choice, click on "save", and put it on your hard drive in the directory of your choice. UnZIP and play from there.

    I know this is not especially convenient, but it allows the film clips to continue. I can protect .zip files from hot-linking in the same way I can protect still images. For some reason, if I protect .avis and .wmvs from hot-linking, they will not play in the Windows media player, and I can't get a satisfactory work-around. Perhaps I will find a better solution, but for now this new policy allows you to continue getting the movie clips you want to see, which is much preferable to my abandoning the clips altogether.

    • She is best known for her x-rated performance in Alice in Wonderland, but Kristine had a mainstream career after that, and made a brief and rarely seen topless appearance in Willie and Phil. I have never seen this movie, but it is a Paul Mazursky film about two guys in love with the same woman, and it spans many years of their lives, ala Jules et Jim. (.avi - zip) (.wmv - zip)

    Bonus (not from Shiloh)

    Tuna put together the uncensored orgy scene from Eyes Wide Shut. Viewed sequentially, these clips cover all the nudity in the mansion, but number #2 is the portion you have not seen. (The other clips are the same as in the North American release). The only difference between this and the North American version is that this version does not have any superfluous digital bodies superimposed between your eyes and the copulating couples.

    FYI when I hypercam vids to make the file size smaller I use DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion for the video compressor, then I use virtualdub to compress the audio. The properties for the vids says the video codec:  DivX Decoder Filter & audio codec:  Morgan Stream Switcher which I'm not familiar with. When I compress the audio with virtualdub I use MPEG Layer-3.  A friend of mine told me about compressing the audio about (6) mos. ago. Like I said previously, only been capping for a year & a half & I'm no expert. Hopefully this info will help members with the proper codecs for my vids.
     
    When I cap big brother's I use hypercam mostly & sdp & asfrecorder if the set up allows me. I stopped using camtasia cause the file sizes were always too big, could never figure out the process, over my head lol, plus it cost too much to buy in my opinion.

    I made the .wmv versions of each video. The codecs for these: Windows Video V8, Windows Audio 9. The upside of these is that you know the codecs, and they'll play in the Windows Media Player. The downside is that they are slightly larger, and slightly lower quality.
