"Cutter's Way" (1981)
Cutter's Way (1981) is a thriller set in picturesque Santa Barbara on the central California coast during the Spanish Days festival. I have been there for the festival, and it is every bit as festive as it is portrayed. Richard Bone (John Heard) sees a man dump a body in a trash can, and confides in his Vietnam vet buddy, Alex Cutter (Jeff Bridges) what he has seen. Cutter is a loudmouthed drunk, missing a leg, a hand and an eye due to war injuries, and a bone fide rascal. Bone has a well-deserved reputation as a ladies man, and also as someone who never faces anything. Cutter goads Bone into taking on the guilty man, who, of course, is the wealthiest man in town. Cutters wife, Mo (Lisa Eichhorn) is long-suffering, and has always had an almost thing with Bone.
Mo and Bone do get together near the end of the film after he sees her exposing a breast asleep on a chaise lounge in nothing but a robe. I enjoyed the film, not so much for the plot, which was rather predictable, but for the characters, and the dialogue -- especially Cutter's. Maltin says 2 1/2 stars, but talks as if he enjoyed it a lot. IMDB readers score it a respectable 7.4/10. Women have it at 8.5, and women over 45 at an exalted 9.0. While it is a little week as a suspense film, the characters make up for it. C+.

"Shadow Hours" (2000)
Shadow Hours (2000) opened on 7 screens and went quickly down to none, grossing a mere $14,392.00. It is an odd noir character driven drama about an ex addict with a pregnant wife and a graveyard shift job at an all-night gas station. Life doesn't get much worse, and he is lured by a customer who claims to be an author willing to pay for help in researching his next book. This "research" entails visiting every sleazy and depraved joint in the Los Angelus, and the ex-addict, Balthazar Getty, becomes increasingly drawn in to vice and corruption by Peter Weller. The highlight is when they rent two hookers from a strip joint (Tane McClure and Cheryl Dent), and take them to an oriental opium den for fun and games. Both women show breasts. There are almost no frames with just one of the women, but I grouped the images according to which one is most prominent. There are also
unknown strippers.
IMDB readers say 4.5/10, despite a small appearance by Rebecca Gayheart as the pregnant wife. Total gross was $37,221.00. I have to add my dislike at D+.

Where Angels Dance is kind of the 1990's version of Clifford Odets' "Golden Boy", a sincere indy about ordinary people's lives in the inner city. It was filmed economically but never distributed to theaters. (Made in 1994). Tuna loved it, if you recall. I thought it was just OK. It has some positives, but I found that it
appears to be something too similar to what it actually is - that is to say a very weak DVD master of a film shot for $70,000 in 18 days with inexperienced actors.
Harlan County War is a fictionalized retelling of the story told by the award-winning 1976 documentary, "Harlan County USA", about the instrumental role played by the miners' wives in a long but ultimately successful coal mining strike. Not especially interesting unless you are already interested in the subject matter,
but handsomely produced by Showtime, and beautifully performed by Miss Hunter and others
