"Faux Fuyants"

Faux Fuyants (1983) was released in the US today with the title Subterfuge, a fact which escaped IMDB, Amazon, and every other on-line source I tried. The film is not available anywhere else in the world that I could find. I ordered it because it was Not Rated, from 1983, released by Image Entertainment who does good work, and had female cast members. The hoped for nudity was there, but at a price. The price was watching one of the oddest French art films I have ever seen. It stars Rachel Rachel in the part of Rachel. She, evidently, was lead singer for a band called Luna Parker, who made the charts with a song titled Tes Etats d'âme Eric. This film is her only IMDB credit.

The main details of the story are easy to explain. A man runs over a pedestrian in Paris, and drives off. After reading the papers the next morning, he learns of the dead man's family, and rents a room in their town, where he befriends the dead mans 16 year old daughter, Rachel. He first went out of curiosity and guilt, but is drawn to her, but not for sexual reasons. He also befriends the teenage son of his landlady. We never learn much about his real life in Paris, except that his wife's family have hired a detective agency to follow him, because they are worried about him. Rachel's mother has a boyfriend, whom Rachel can't stand. Evidently, the boyfriend is not a recent addition, and, in fact, witnessed the accident.

Well, that sets most of the players, now for a few odd plot points from the film. Rachel earns money baby sitting. She tells a mother that she thinks her son is disturbed. The mother indignantly throws her out. The kid jumps to his death a few weeks later. Rachel is fond of taking baths with her pet snake. Even after Rachel learns that her friend killed her father, she likes him anyway. Rachel and her girl friend kill the mother's boyfriend. If any of that gives you an idea of what the film was about, or any thoughts as to symbolism, please share them with me. I don't have a clue what this film was trying to say. Rachel Rachel shows her breasts in a lengthy scene at the beach. There are no votes and no reviews at IMDB, and the best I could do searching the net was a French version of what the box already said. This was a dead film, and I regret exhuming it. D.

    "All About Eve"

All About Eve (1950) is the 57th greatest film of all time, according to IMDB. It has a 100% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, and 6,777 voters at IMDB have it at 8.5 of 10. After watching it last night, I found it very long at 2 hours and 18 minutes, and felt that the entire story line was out of the bag in the first half hour. Based on my viewing experience, I wondered what I had missed that everyone else saw. In a short talk with Scoopy today, I found that he also shared my impression of the film. Perhaps the clearest explanation of the greatness of the film is Roger Ebert's review, which essentially praises the acting, and the biting dialogue. In reading his review, I had to admit that I also loved performances by Bette Davis and Anne Baxter, and found several memorable lines. Roger had seen the same film the same way, but felt that is was a worthwhile way to spend 138 minutes. Less sophisticated audiences hadn't seen evil calculating woman movies in 1950, and satire was unheard of in film at the time, so it had a real edge then. Although that edge isn't nearly as keen now, the film continues to win fans.

The film was nominated for 14 Oscars, a record that held until Titanic, including 5 acting awards, another indication of why it is so highly rated, emphasizing again, the performances. Baxter and Davis both received nominations for Best Actress, but lost to Judy Holliday in Born Yesterday. Many feel that votes from lovers of this film were split, and that Davis would have won had Baxter not been nominated. It was certainly Bette Davis' best performance in a career of many great performances. Her aging stage actress Margo Channing was a complete and complex character, and one which might have been drawn from her own life. At least her life experiences gave her the background to create the character. The film won for Best Sound, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Costume, Best Picture and Best Screenplay.

All About Eve is the story of a young wannabe actress (Anne Baxtor as Eve Harrington) who is introduced to Margo Channing (Davis) backstage as her biggest fan, and ingratiates her way into her life and her circle of friends, including her director boy friend, her producer, her playwright, and a well known critic. In time, Margo realizes that Eve is 100% ambition, and wants her place in the theater, her boyfriend, and everything else she can get. As the film opens, we are at a prestigious awards banquet, where Eve is to receive their highest award. The opening is narrated by critic Addison DeWitt (George Sanders), and as the speaker is talking about Eve in glowing terms, we see close-ups of the people Eve has stepped on. It is here that we first clearly see Davis's brilliance. Look at image one. Without a single line of dialogue, Davis clearly portrays that she doesn't agree at all with what the speaker is saying about Eve. The rest of the film shows how Eve went from starry-eyed kid to top of the heap. Baxtor's performance was also excellent. She keeps her motives close to the breast for most of the film, and doesn't develop nearly as much of a character as Davis, but keeps her performance low key enough that we have no trouble believing that the mousy girl at the beginning, and the ruthless and ambitious woman at the end are the same person.

The film also features Marilyn Monroe as a no-talent wannabe escorted to a party by the critic. She is the reason I decided to do images for this film, which, of course, has no nudity, but while I was at it, I thought it was worth covering Davis and Baxter at the same time. Even in this film, if Marilyn is on camera, even with the likes of Betty Davis, it is her you see.

There is no way to award this film less than an A, as it clearly appeals to nearly everyone. I did enjoy some aspects, but can easily think of hundreds of films I enjoyed more. The DVD version was remastered from a new 35mm print, and is in very good shape for the age. I would have liked to see much more in the way of special features.

Dark Descent is a straight-to-vid with Dean Cain. It is so similar to Outland that the Outland people could sue if they hadn't already ripped off their own movie from High Noon. A few years back, Cain was a TV star. Now he's making movies where he's the only guy who can speak English.

The Business of Strangers was a critically lauded film, basically a three-character play. Critics love that shit.  Despite the reviews, the movie was greeted with universal yawns by audiences. No nudity.

Deuces Wild is to gang movies as "That's Entertainment" is to musicals. It's like a series of highlight clips from other gang movies, except acted out by a new cast. Matt Dillon as a Mafioso?

Passion Crimes is some kind of high crap softcore thingy.

Here are the latest movie reviews available at scoopy.com.

    • The yellow asterisks indicate that I wrote the review, and am deluded into thinking it includes humor.
    • If there is a white asterisk, it means that there isn't any significant humor, but I inexplicably determined there might be something else of interest.
    • A blue asterisk indicates the review is written by Tuna (or Lawdog or Junior or C2000 or Realist or ICMS or Mick Locke, or somebody else besides me)
    • If there is no asterisk, I wrote it, but am too ashamed to admit it.

    'Caps and commetns by Hankster:

Today we feature Louise Robey in 1992's "Play Nice" a film about a serial killer whose victims are men. Louise is bedding the detective on the case and of course it turns out she is the killer. Louise is quite an attractive woman and this seems to be the only nudity she has done. Canadian born she has had a career as a model, singer and actress. Probably best known from the "Friday the 13th: The Series".

    • Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, in "Rollerball".

    • Lark Voorhies, pokies from hip-hop/doper comedy "How High". Even though I'm not a fan of hip hop and haven't smoked weed in years, I still enjoyed this flick very much. It's a very funny gross-out comedy with non-stop drug humor and college kids fighting the evil Dean of the school. Not for everyone, but worth the rental if you're enjoy good low-brow humor.
    • Essence Atkins, more pokies from "How High" (1, 2)

Even though her robo-hooters are not the best I've ever seen, at least they aren't the worst. Besides, the rest of her is pretty darn nice. Add to that the fact that she loves to show all of the goodies as a Skinemax regular, and what you get is a great late night babe.

In these 'caps by Uco from "Testing the Limits" (1998), we see all 3 B's, some pseudo sex, and even a little lesbo lovin'.

A cool, rare find by Señor Skin, here is the former Heffer (a 30th anniversary Heffer to be exact) topless in scenes from the movie "The Men's Club" (1986). If nothing else you must admire here all natural big'uns. A rarity these days.

    Man Show News

    Scoops,

I couldn't help but notice after following the link in the Tuesday edition for the Man Show Juggy try-outs, one of the hopefuls is Annie Sorell, known to readers of your page as one of the very lovely, very naked, but not-so-talented identical twins in the shower scene of the straigt-to-vid movie "Cruel Intentions II".

Looks like she could use a bit of help in the voting.

From IMDB News. I agree, one should always see a Madonna movie before hating it...

    Madonna Defends "Swept Away"

Pop queen Madonna has hit back at reports her new movie is on the verge of being scrapped. The singer stars alongside Jennifer Aniston in the film - directed by her husband, Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels movie maker Guy Ritchie. But, since the project's completion in March, the rumor-plagued flick has been beset with problems - with some newspaper reports claiming the film may go straight to video release and others insisting it may not be released at all, after test audiences reportedly didn't like seeing Madonna fall in love with a man who was abusive to her. The Material Girl, however, is adamant the show will go on and that Swept Away is still on schedule to hit cinema screens in October. Madonna's spokeswoman told one American gossip site, "I've been in LA all week working on the marketing of the film, and it went really well. People should at least see the film before they decide to hate it."

Some lights burned out in the sign on the Danal's supermarket down the street from me, and for about three weeks, this is what it looked like at night. I couldn't resist snapping a photo. I imagine it drew a whole new clientele, but that many of them were disappointed to find it was only a grocery store.

    Scoops,

Can anyone confirm or deny whether or not Brittany Daniel posed for the Brazilian edition of the bunny mag circa 1999? She was the hot babe in "Joe Dirt", one of the twins from "Sweet Valley High", and most recently seen as the sexy bisexual on "That 80's Show".

    Jr's reply
The only bunny appearance I could find any reference to was a non-nude write up in the 8/01 issue of the US version.
