Past Midnight (1992) is a thriller staring Rutger Hauer as a parolee who supposed stabbed his pregnant wife to death, and Natasha Richardson as the social worker assigned to his case. Here is exactly where the story doesn't work for me. She is a seasoned social worker, and he is the always creepy Rutger Hauer, yet she has a hunch he is innocent, and falls for him. I just found it impossible to believe that any woman, much less a seasoned social worker, would find Hauer that irresistible.

The rest of the film deals with did he or didn't he, and who will survive. Richardson shows her breasts in a long but not very passionate sex scene. IMDB readers have this at 5.0 of 10. I can find no evidence of a US theatrical release. I have no idea where the title comes from. The film has the usual red herrings and plot twists, but I was too put off by Hauer's casting to even care. This is a low C-. Genre addicts will probably not reach for the fast forward.

• I Heart Huckabee's. David O Russell's first movie since Three Kings. Big A-list cast. (Jude Law, Naomi Watts, Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Isabelle Huppert, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Wahlberg). Albert Markovski (Schwartzman), head of the Open Spaces Coalition, has been experiencing an alarming series of coincidences the meaning of which escapes him. With the help of two Existential Detectives, Bernard and Vivian Jaffe (Hoffman and Tomlin), Albert examines his life, his relationships, and his conflict with Brad Stand (Law), an executive climbing the corporate ladder at Huckabees, a popular chain of retail superstores. When Brad also hires the detectives, they dig deep into his seemingly perfect life and his relationship with his spokesmodel girlfriend, the voice of Huckabees, Dawn Campbell (Watts). Albert pairs up with rebel firefighter Tommy Corn (Wahlberg) to take matters into their own hands under the guidance of the Jaffes' nemesis, the French radical Caterine Vauban (Huppert).

NOTE: because of a unique combination of circumstances with the Windows media player and some substantial bandwidth theft, we will have to do all of our movie files in zip format. Left click on the files as you normally would to view a picture. When you get a choice, click on "save", and put it on your hard drive in the directory of your choice. UnZIP and play from there.

I know this is not especially convenient, but it allows the film clips to continue. I can protect .zip files from hot-linking in the same way I can protect still images. For some reason, if I protect .avis and .wmvs from hot-linking, they will not play in the Windows media player, and I can't get a satisfactory work-around. Perhaps I will find a better solution, but for now this new policy allows you to continue getting the movie clips you want to see, which is much preferable to my abandoning the clips altogether.

Shiloh continues to come up with some great clips we've never featured before.

• A much younger, but less toned Nicole Kidman in "Dead Calm". The DVD version of this scene is even better. This "full screen" version is a pan 'n scan, and the widescreen DVD clearly shows her bum. • Halle Berry in "Swordfish". The topless scene is probably very familiar to you from our past polls and discussions (it was the Scoopy-winning nude scene of its year), but the sexiest scene in the film is the one of Halle in the skimpy underwear, shown here.( .avi- zip) (.wmv - zip)

FYI when I hypercam vids to make the file size smaller I use DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion for the video compressor, then I use virtualdub to compress the audio. The properties for the vids says the video codec:  DivX Decoder Filter & audio codec:  Morgan Stream Switcher which I'm not familiar with. When I compress the audio with virtualdub I use MPEG Layer-3.  A friend of mine told me about compressing the audio about (6) mos. ago. Like I said previously, only been capping for a year & a half & I'm no expert. Hopefully this info will help members with the proper codecs for my vids.

 

When I cap big brother's I use hypercam mostly & sdp & asfrecorder if the set up allows me. I stopped using camtasia cause the file sizes were always too big, could never figure out the process, over my head lol, plus it cost too much to buy in my opinion.

I made the .wmv versions of each video. The codecs for these: Windows Video V8, Windows Audio 9. The upside of these is that you know the codecs, and they'll play in the Windows Media Player. The downside is that they are slightly larger, and slightly lower quality.

"Blowback"
Predictable isn't that bad if it's well done. This 2000 crime thriller is certainly predictable, but getting there is half the fun, and you won't be bored watching this one.

The story's typical: a cop becomes too involved in a serial-killer case which is frighteningly similiar to a case he solved years ago, and for which the murderer was executed.

When the jury and prosecuting attorneys from the first case start dieing in exactly the same manner as the victims of that case, and the copycat knows things he can't possibly know about the original case, the cop becomes so obsessed he eventually get kicked off the case, but then his own ex-wife, the prosecutor in the first case, may be a potential victim, so he keeps working on his own. Add a couple more twists, and you've got a solid movie that overcomes it's predictable nature.

Incidentially, life isn't always fair, is it? While star Gladys Jimenez got to hang on a cross rightside-up, poor bit player Erynn Dana Dalton had to do her gig hanging upside-down.
