Atonement

 

The official plot summary: "In the summer of 1935, 13-year-old Briony Tallis observes a flirtation between a servant's son, Robbie, and her older sister, Cecilia, that she childishly misconstrues. Briony's misunderstanding leads to a terrible crime whose consequences follow them through World War II."

Personally I don't know jack about this film except that Keira Knightley gets soaked while wearing a flimsy outfit with no underwear, which means I'll watch it whether it is another Casablanca or another Creeping Terror.

The Night of the Sorcerers

(1973)

The Night of the Sorcerers (1973), originally La Noche de los brujos, is a horror offering from Amando de Ossorio. The film declares its intentions from the opening frame in a sequence before the opening credits. A white woman is captured in the jungle and tied standing up by the arms and ankles, then her clothing is removed via a bullwhip. Once she's naked, they place her on a sacrificial altar, and cut her head off. It rolls into a shelf of sorts, and then pops up alive, but with vampire fangs.

Eventually, we learn that this particular form of sacrifice creates jaguar women, who are sort of vampire zombie priestesses. No soon has the woman lost her head, then her companions, great white hunters, arrive and shoot all of the native priestesses. Cut to the present day, and a new group comes to the jungle to study why there are no elephants in the area. Naturally, they choose to camp near the sacred ground where the zombies arise and sacrifice new victims. The group therefore consists of two men and three future vampire zombie priestesses.

The opening scene certainly got all of my attention, and there was more of the same throughout the film. This film has long been available in many versions, most of them heavily cut. It is finally being released on 8/21/07 in an uncut and uncensored version. That makes it a long-lost cult item now found, which will cause some rejoicing, but only among a tiny audience. The genre is 70s Eurosleaze, and this certainly meets or exceeds all genre expectations.

The DVD offers a choice of Spanish with English subtitles, or badly dubbed English.

The Collector

This one is a real trip down memory lane as the Time Machine traveled back to 1965 for "The Collector," the story of a timid bank clerk who collects butterflies and then decides to kidnap a young college student to add to his collection, hoping that she will learn to love him.

William Wyler directed and Terence Stamp and Samantha Eggar were phenomenal in their roles. If you have never seen this one, you should, because it has stood up well to the test of time.

Samantha did not get naked, but she was a very provocative and alluring victim. Her "Babe in Bondage" scene in the bathroom is never to be forgotten.

 

Latin Dragon
 

Cheap action movie that marks the acting debut of Latin Martial Arts star Fabian Carrillo.

He probably shouldn't expect anything from this line of work.

They got Gary Busey and Lorenzo Lamas to play the bad guys, and they are the best things about the movie, so you can imagine how bad it is.
