"City of Fear" (1999)
City of Fear (1999) was one of those blockbuster rental exclusives, but has been released on DVD. It is better than most of the Blockbuster exclusives. Shot in Sofia, Bulgaria, it is the story of an American journalist (Gary Daniels) with an Australian accent who goes to Sophia purportedly to cover
a medical breakthrough made by his best friend. We also learn in the opening that he is an accomplished martial artist lacking only a sense of purpose and harmony with the universe to be great.
Upon arrival, he finds he is just in time for his friend's funeral. He decides to investigate, and teams with the lovely Carol Campbell to unravel what is going on. The players include Bulgarian national police, Interpol, the Russian Mafia, and more. There are two nude scenes, the first with
Campbell in her dressing room showing the side of a breast, and her buns in sheer stockings. The second is a lovemaking scene, where she shows her breasts. Daniels has a few good fighting sequences.
Sofia is an attractive city, and they shot enough of the film outdoors to take advantage of that. While the story was a little fuzzy here and there, it kept my interest for the most part. IMDB readers say 5.2/10, but with only 5 votes. I will give it a C.

"Nightbreed" (1990)
Nightbreed (1990) is a Clive Barker film about a community of outcasts of different types, mostly undead, under attack by a psychotic psychiatrist and a bunch of rednecks. Craig Sheffer is Boone, patient of the evil shrink, who dreams about Midian (the community of freaks) and tries to join. He is turned back at the gait, as he is still alive, but is bitten. When he is later shot, he comes back to life and is accepted into the community, which he ends up saving.
The film is long on atmosphere, great make-up, special effects and visuals, but has too many characters and too muddled a plot to hold your attention. Catherine Chevalier plays a mutant who bares her breasts to distract a young cop. Maltin says 2 1/2 stars, IMDB readers say 5.7/10. Fox required Barker to trim the film by 25 minutes to make it less explicit, and remove what they thought was unnecessary plot and character development. Perhaps the film would be better in the directors cut. C-, only because it looks so good. From a plot standpoint alone, it would be lower.

Safe is the kind of movie Ingmar Bergman would make if he were young and American. The premise is that our unexamined despoliation of the world is destroying our bodies and our souls, we don't know how to treat it, quacks try to take our money to treat it, and when we try to treat it we make it worse. And if we could cure it, we would find out
that our lives are not worth living anyway.
That's some real happy-go-lucky Farrelly Brothers shit right there.
Rated r for no possible reason except extreme depression. No nudity or violence, almost no language. There is a sex scene, but it contains no nudity, and the scene is absolutely necessary to establish the lifeless, joyless coupling in their lives. Beautiful performance by Julianne Moore as an empty-headed trophy wife. The role, as written, could have been a cartoon, but Ms Moore found a way to connect to the genuine heart and soul of the character, such as it was.
Vamp is the comedy-horror vampire movie with Grace Jones, meant as an homage to After Hours in the manner of An American Werewolf in London.
Oddball film. Not really very good, but an amusing DVD for reasons described in the review, and I have to give some extra points to any film which stars Long Duk Dong from 16 Candles, because, let's face it, The Donger rules, dude.

Yesterday's scan of Gisele....Real or Fake?
Of course, Jedilein is a respected and established German-based imager who has been around the internet for years, so he wouldn't fake the picture. And the picture was actually posted by Jedilein, not by a third party. He says that he scanned it just as it was, and I believe him completely. You should see that exact picture on the cover of German GQ if you go to your local
newsstand.
Therefore, if there was any faking going on, either it was faked by GQ, or they gullibly purchased a fake.
By the way, Blackshine, another established German imager, agrees with those of you on the fake side of the debate. He scanned the original images from George magazine.
He wrote:
"my problems with this version are:
- The pictures are by David Lachapelle, I saw many books/mags about him with the George images shown... none of them show any nudity.
- Gisele is known as a model who has a no-nude clause - she did nudes in the past, but this was before she got famous.
- GQ (especially the German issue) hasn't sold many copies lately and I suppose they will do anything to raise sales to keep up with Maxim & FHM who are taking over the market after only 6 months.
- even for a good photographer it's nearly impossible to create 2 (such) similar images "
The Fake Detective also agrees that the image seems to have been created manually from the David LaChapelle series.
