"The Last Picture Show"

The Last Picture Show (1971) is set in the 50's in a small Texas town, and was shot in B&W, which was a daring style decision for 1971. Peter Bogdanovich (Writer and Director) achieved exactly the atmosphere he wanted partially due to this choice, and the film was well-received both critically and by the general public. The decision was partly because he felt the starkness he wanted for the film was better achieved in B & W, and partly because Orson Wells suggested it as the only way he could get the depth of field he wanted. Ironically, the first line of the Time magazine review said that it was the best film since Citizen Kane. It is a character driven drama based on a novel, and was filmed in the actual small town that the novel was written around. The townspeople were not overjoyed at having all their dirty laundry aired.

Stars include Cybill Shepherd (nude), Ellen Burstyn, Ben Johnson, Randy Quaid, Jeff Bridges and Timothy Bottoms to name a few. Won Oscars for both Best supporting actor and actress, and was nominated for 6 other Oscars. Also won BAFTAs, Golden Globes, etc.

Timothy Bottoms and Jeff Bridges are High School seniors, on the football team, and are best friends in this tiny Texas town in the early 50s. Shephard plays the rich, attractive girl that both want. The film is peopled with fascinating, and true to life characters, and the 120 minute running time passes quickly. The DVD transfer is very nice. There was no sound track, but, rather, popular country & western tunes accurate to the year the film supposedly takes place in.

IMDB readers have this at 8.0 of 10, and it would be impossible to find a critic who didn't like it. The film was made for a modest $1.3M. This film is an A. I had seen it twice before, and revisited it to grab the images below. I ended up glued to the screen for the entire running time.

    MOVIE REVIEWS:

Here are the latest movie reviews available at scoopy.com.

    • The yellow asterisks indicate that I wrote the review, and am deluded into thinking it includes humor.
    • If there is a white asterisk, it means that there isn't any significant humor, but I inexplicably determined there might be something else of interest.
    • A blue asterisk indicates the review is written by Tuna (or Lawdog or Junior or C2000 or Realist or ICMS or Mick Locke, or somebody else besides me)
    • If there is no asterisk, I wrote it, but am too ashamed to admit it.
