Women Behind Bars
(1975)
Women Behind Bars is a Jess Franco "women in prison"
film starring Lina Romay and Martine Stedil, with Jess himself playing a major role.
Given the number of Franco fans, a very tiny number of IMDb votes
speaks to the long-standing unavailability of this Eurosleaze classic. That will be solved
August 28th, when Blue Underground releases a remastered version
that sports a great transfer of the English language version, and
includes the original French trailer as well as a new interview with
Franco.
The film starts with a diamond theft
in which the gang leader shoots the others,
then returns to a bar owned by him and Romay. She then shoots him
and
turns herself in, claiming that he was cheating, and it was an act
of passion. She is sentenced to a special prison to serve her two
years. An insurance investigator, sure that the new inmate must
knew where the
diamonds are, travels there to talk with her. Meanwhile, the prison warden also
thinks his new prisoner knows the whereabouts of the jewels, so he
asks his inmate
lover (Martine Stedil) to get close to Romay. Of course, there is
more going on.
In a new interview conducted specifically for this release, Jess Franco says that he likes this
film very much, because of a simple plot which is easy to understand.
That's true enough, but is not a significant drawing card for fans
of WIP films. Sadly, Women Behind Bars is lacking in some of the genre expectations,
and isn't, for the most part, especially nasty, sensational, or
exciting.
It does feature Linay Romay in her prime, and both Romay and Martine Stedil do extended full frontal and
rear nudity, some of it in great light. There are two scenes of
torture, a girl/girl scene, and sex between the corrupt warden and a
prisoner. On the other hand, the film is missing other genre staples such as a
shower scene and a good cat fight.
It's of interest mainly to Jess Franco fans because it's barely
satisfactory for those craving WIP action, and generally unappealing
to those interested in nether the director nor the genre.

"Latin Lover"

Here is an overview of the story:
A climax of uncertainty echoes through the studio set of Latin Lover. Rafael
Carballo, the handsome director of the telenovela is struggling with the casting
of the leading lady. He is obsessed with finding his perfect "Azucena" which is
creating a great deal of tension amongst the executives of Canal Internacional,
the network who is producing the novela, especially since they have already
begun to shoot it. This situation is being fully taken advantage of by Renata
and Valeria, two beautiful actresses, both determined to get the role, at any
cost. What no one suspects is that Claudia, the humble and sensual niece of the
cooking lady who prepares the lunches for the production cast & crew, is about
to become the heroine of the novel, despite her wanting nothing to do with
acting or with Rafael. Meanwhile, Claudia is in love with Omar, an attractive
mechanic, who turns jealous and possessive, and tries to stall her career, which
prompts her to leave him.
Rafael is completely taken with Claudia, and proves to be a driven and
successful professional, but always manages to get himself into compromising
positions due to his weakness for women. His penchant for passion creates
various erotic as well as problematic situations with not only the actresses he
directs, but with Viviana, his long time girlfriend.
Viviana is the beautiful and elegant daughter of Samuel Ventura, owner of the
television network that produces "Latin Lover," and she is hopelessly in love
with and devoted to Rafael. Once a twist of fate reveals Rafael's infidelities,
she leaves him and resigns from her post at the network.
Rafael is devastated at the loss and resigns himself to seeking out Viviana's
forgiveness, but despite odds and against her initial rejections, he winds up
becoming involved with Claudia.
Samuel Ventura, Viviana's father, and the wealthy owner of the television
network, is married to Mariana, with whom he has a stagnant and unhappy
relationship with. This turns out to be quite advantageous to his lover,
Barbara, however.
Barbara Mongrut is the complete femme fatale. She has made sex her personal and
favored manipulation tool, and she has it down to a calculated science. Her
ultimate goal is to take over Samuel's post as head of the network. Enemies and
meddlers beware. Barbara is the schemer behind all of Samuel's downfalls,
although she lives with the constant frustration of knowing that he doesn't love
her.
Things get complicated between Samuel and Barbara when Samuel drops her for
Debora, a young starlet. Debora, the young and manipulative daughter of the
volatile stage mother Jakeline, goes to all lengths to convince Samuel to cast
her into the telenovela, only to seduce him to the point of love! Debora in
turn, is amazed by the show of affection from older, wealthy Samuel, but is
distracted by Fabian, a young stuntman who rose to actor. She finds herself in a
heated love affair
with Fabian, but her double life catches up only to leave her exposed and
abandoned.
A final note: Paola Aravena is a stage name, and the actress also goes by her
real name, Paola Martínez Díaz, I did the caps with the Aravena last name, but
if you want to search more of her go with her real name.

Former astronaut Lisa Nowak, who allegedly drove from Texas to Florida in
diapers to pepper spray and kidnap a love rival, faced her victim in a hearing
in Orlando Friday and apologized. Her lawyer is trying to get evidence against
her thrown out, including her confession and a steel mallet and knife found in
her car. Nowak also asked to have her electronic monitoring bracelet
removed, saying it hurts her ankle, makes it hard to tie her boot, and has cost
her $3,000 to change the batteries twice a day. An assistant D.A. said if money
is an issue, "You're paying a media consultant. Fire the consultant."

In Touch magazine reports that Lindsay Lohan's 13-year-old sister Ali was
involved in a car crash Friday night after she allegedly sneaked out of the
family house to go out with a 16-year-old boy who had a learner's permit and had
taken his mom's car without permission. Ali was unharmed.
* And she managed to hijack a car and get home before her
mom noticed she was gone.
* As punishment, Ali was grounded for 35 minutes.
