New Releases
  • I used to like New Releases day. I'd sleep in, read the paper, write some jokes, and wait for Realist to deliver some cool stuff. I don't think I'm going to like it any more, as I wait outside the door for Blockbuster to open, and spend the whole fuggin' day on this stuff. Oh, well, I hope it came out OK. I've pretty much copied his style. I'm not as good at it, but they're OK. The first new DVD release yesterday was an obscure boat movie I never heard of. No, I suppose this is the most famous scene of its time: Kate Winslet stripping and posing for Leo.
  • If you look over Leo's shoulder, I think you'll see just a suggestion of ....
  • This is the brief and too-dark rear view. Kate's face is pretty and her bosom is soft and inviting, but I don't think she or the filmmaker wanted to lavish much camera time on her buns. The joke on the set of the film was that the film's title didn't refer to a boat, but to the size of Winslet's bottom
  • more Kate
  • more Kate. I won't tell you anything about this movie. I think everyone in the world has seen it.
  • "Idle Hands" is next in line. It is a movie that did a mediocre box office, and was savaged by many critics. IMDb viewers vote it a lowly 5.4 out of 10. I disagree. It is a fun watch, possibly even the best of its genre, the comedy horror/grossout movie. Devon Sawa did some very impressive physical comedy and Scott Evil was hilarious in another cynical outsider role, a niche he is starting to dominate in his generation. I laughed out loud several times while capping it. The stupid plot: slacker's right hand is possessed by a demon. After he unwillingly kills a couple of his stoner friends, who incidentally refuse to go to heaven because it's too far to walk up that staircase, he cuts off the hand. the rest of the movie is a battle between the hand and the humans. Kelly Monaco provided the nudity. Kelly was the Playperson in April of 1997, and she looks real fine.
  • Kelly is having a great time until she realizes there are three hands on her breasts.
  • the dreaded overhead cam
  • one more of Kelly. Just for fun, and because she looks sexy, I left this one in natural light, unadjusted, uncontrasted.
  • Jesica Alba is the female star of this movie. She didn't get naked, but we did get a good look at her bottom in this scene
  • here's she's strapped to a car roof in her underwear. Would take too long to explain.
  • rescued, but still in her underwear
  • crawling through a vent
  • also new on DVD today: "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels". Great movie. Close to four stars in my book. The plot is so complicated I had trouble following it, but that doesn't matter, because it's really about style and feel, not plot. Take a soupcon of those old British caper flicks, like The Lavender Hill Mob. Mix in some violent new cockney gangsters, ala The Long Good Friday. Now take those two elements and think, "how would Tarantino script and direct this if he were British?" So in come all the sarcastic gangsters, stylized violence, intersecting storylines, brutal thugs with everyday concerns like you and me, etc. You can relate to the characters, and the dialogue is quite clever. The plot isn't bad, but it doesn't matter much, because it's fun. This woman provided the only nudity. She is not listed in the credits. According to IMBd, Laura Bailey was in the movie, and this was the only uncredited woman with any significant screen time, so that would make this Laura. It does look like Laura, who had vaery distinctive eyes, but I am not certain. (Can you Brits help me out here?) Laura actually had fifteen minutes of fame. Back when Richard Gere was married to Cindy Crawford, he had a well-publicized fling with alleged fellow Buddhist Laura during the filming of First Knight. (The runway model later revealed that her Buddhism was myth, not reality.)
  • Here's one more of the woman who might be Laura Bailey, but also might not be. FYI, the other movie which came out on DVD today was "200 Cigarettes". A wee bit of male nudity, but no female. Roger Ebert gave the movie a half of a star, and that was approximately .5 of a star too many, in my opinion. A painful experience.

  • More from Scandinavia. This is Sofie Grabol in Morkets Oy. The last three O's should be written with a slash through them, as you'll see. It means something like The Island of Darkness. Oops@! I guess Island of The Darkness would be better. (No definite article in Norwegian or Danish, and I ten to get confused.). This is a Danish/Norwegian production. I really had quite a revelation when I lived in Norway. I had no trouble at all with the Danish written language. Danish and Norwegian in writing are about as close as British and American. But when it came to speaking, I couldn't understand one word of Danish. Not one word. I couldn't pick it up from Norwegian or German. I guess the strange thing is that I didn't know this would happen because Danes and Norwegians can communicate with one another. It isn't completely easy for them, but they can do it. But I didn't have a clue, so my Norwegian woman friend translated for me in Denmark when necessary. (You generally only need translation with older people. Young Danes speak English almost without exception, so no other language is necessary. Most Scandinavians and Dutch speak English at near-native proficiency. Grammatically, they probably speak better than either Brits or Americans, because they try to speak correctly, whereas native speakers usually just say whatever comes out naturally.)
