"Total Recall" (1990)
Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall is, I am sure, familiar to all of you. On the off chance that it isn't, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been given a new set of memories to prevent him from seeking revenge on the corrupt officials who nearly cost him his life on mars. After a visit to a virtual
reality center that can create a temporary set of memories, his real memories begin to return. Arnold does what Arnold is good at -- he gets mad and gets even.
Sharon Stone has been hired to pretend to be his wife so she can keep an eye on him in case his memory returns. Most of the exposure is from a scene with the two of them in bed early in the film. We are also given a good look at Lycia Naff with not two but three breasts.
Although I am not an Arnold fan, this is a great vehicle for him, as it is mostly action, and the special effects alone are worth the price of admission. The DVD transfer is excellent, although it is a little short of extras.

Lycia Naff
"Cyborg 2" (1993)
Cyborg 2 starts out with promise. The PinWheel corporation has created a Cyborg that is nearly form, fit and function a human. One experimental model has been converted into a walking bomb. The idea is to have her (Angelina Jolie) explode at the rival Japanese firm, and secure a monopoly for PinWheel. Jolie and one of her human instructors begin to fall in love, and escape. This is where the film goes down hill rapidly. We have three plot elements, and none of them done well. A benefactor contacted through nearly any CRT is trying to help them escape. PinWheel is trying to capture them, and they are falling more and more in love. The DVD transfer is awful -- dark and grainy. Some of the set design, art direction and special effects work, but are not nearly enough to save this one.
We have a naked Jolie in a dark grainy scene, and an Unknown in the bath.

"Beyond the Clouds" (1995)
Frankly, this movie is pretty much of a rip-off. It is marketed as the first project from Antonioni in years. Well - um - let's look at the facts. Antonioni was something like 83 when this movie was made, and he had had several debilitating strokes. Think Mohammed Ali, except 25 years older. Got the picture?
So, Antonioni may have had some contributions to make, but you can bet that the real direction was done by Wim Wenders. Of course, Wenders himself is a great talent (he directed the brilliant Wings of Desire, the movie which Hollywood remade and commercialized as City of Angels), but it's not really an Antonioni movie, is it?
Except ...
Antonioni did write the book upon which this film is based, a collection of semi-autobiographical stories called That Bowling Alley on the Tiber.
Does that redeem it? Well, sir, I need only remind you that Antonioni is a director, not a writer. I haven't read that book in any language, but the narration of this film is some seriously pretentious Euro-crap, every line delivered as if pregnant with great portent.
Sophie Marceau is in one segment, although the elderly Antonioni must have thought she was Marcel Marceau, because she doesn't speak for many minutes. She and John Malkovich, who plays the part of Antonioni, do a little love dance around each other through Portofino, and when Marceau finally breaks the silence, it is to inform Malkovich that she stabbed her husband 12 times, whereupon he takes her home and humps the daylights out of her, and then ruminates to the camera about the significance of the 12 wounds
In another segment, a beautiful couple keep getting together without making love, because first one then the other turns away.
In the third major segment, Peter Weller tries to balance the demands of his wife and his mistress, and Jean Reno shows up to provide some atmosphere. I was surprised to hear ol' Robocop speak French, but there wasn't any other good reason to watch the segment.
Except nudity. Thank god for the nudity. The movie was quite well filmed, as you might expect, with plenty of scenes that evoke the inherent loneliness of existence, and three fine lookin' tootsies got naked. Ines Sastre is one of the most beautiful women in the world, but it is difficult to capture that in stills. But she looks great in the film, even if the captures don't reflect it.
So, you might want to skip the movie unless you're a serious Antonioni fan. There is also a film about Antonioni on the DVD, and that alone is nearly an hour long, so you'll get an education about the old buzzard, even if the movie is duller than the butter knives in a suicide ward.
