"The Box"
The Box (2003) is a tragic romance/crime thriller. James Russo has just been released after a three year term for sticking up a jewelry store. After a life of crime, he is finally sick of prison. He is given a room in a fleabag hotel and a job in a junkyard. Then we discover that he stashed the jewels with a fence, and is intent on getting his money. Things are still looking rosy when he becomes chummy with the waitress in the local greasy spoon (Theresa Russell), but he is forced the kill the fence, and she has more than a few skeletons of her own. From that point on, the story gets very mean-spirited. Russo plays a stone face with no emotion, but Russell gave a decent performance.
Russell, who is now well over her fighting weight shows most of a breast. Meadow Williams, as a stripper, shows breasts. IMDb readers have this at 4.4 of 10. It premiered at Cannes, but doesn't seem to have had a US release. They succeeded to the extent that I was rooting for Russo and Russell, which made the ending hard to swallow. The atmosphere is consistently dark, making the film reasonably competent. This is a C-.

The trailer for Eulogy: "When three generations of a
deliciously dysfunctional family gather to bury the family
patriarch, the beloved granddaughter of the deceased is given the
task of delivering the eulogy. In the days leading up to the
funeral, family secrets are revealed, old grudges resurface and
the household erupts with renewed vigor. A wickedly irreverent
comedy, Eulogy is ultimately a heartwarming portrait of a houseful
of misfits celebrating the strangest and most enduring bond of
all. Kate Collins (Zooey Deschanel), struggling through an awkward
first year at college, returns home upon the death of her
grandfather. At school, Kate might not fit in, but at home, she is
quickly surrounded by a disruptive group of people even weirder
than she is: her family. First, there's her father, Daniel (Hank
Azaria), once child star, now in 'adult' films. Then there's
tightly wound Aunt Lucy (Kelly Preston), who has waited till the
last minute to announce her wedding to life partner Judy (Famke
Janssen); and wildly inappropriate Uncle Skip (Ray Romano) with
his obnoxious twin boys. And last but not least, there's uptight
and pushy Aunt Alice (Debra Winger), whose brash approach to
marriage, motherhood and casseroles is unsettling to all
concerned. When her grandmother (Piper Laurie) entrusts her with
the task of delivering the eulogy at the funeral, Kate turns to
her relatives for help. She quickly comes to realize that her own
fond memories of Grandpa Collins (Rip Torn) are not shared by his
children, who can only remember a distant father who, when around,
could barely keep their names straight. As Kate struggles to find
the right words to commemorate the solemn occasion, the rest of
the family prepares for the event with its usual unruliness. In
between the raucous infighting and the hilarious backbiting,
family secrets are revealed and old wounds are "

Words from Scoop.
.avi's from Shiloh.
.wmv files made by Scoop from Shiloh's .avi's.
NOTE: because of a unique combination of
circumstances with the Windows media player and some substantial
bandwidth theft, we will have to do all of our movie files in zip
format. Left click on the files as you normally would to view a
picture. When
you get a choice, click on "save", and put it on your hard drive in
the directory of your choice. UnZIP and play from there.
I know this is not especially convenient, but it
allows the film clips to continue. I can protect .zip files from
hot-linking in the same way I can protect still images. For some
reason, if I protect .avis and .wmvs from hot-linking, they will not
play in the Windows media player, and I can't get a satisfactory
work-around. Perhaps I will find a better solution, but for now this
new policy allows you to continue getting the movie clips you want
to see, which is much preferable to my abandoning the clips
altogether.
Gwyneth
-
Gwyneth Paltrow - in
Sylvia. It's a film
about Sylvia Plath, a semi-famous poetess with a history of mental
illness. Unfortunately, the movie was not able to quote from any of
her work, and offered no insight into her mental decline, which
didn't leave much except some good performances, and an emotional
pairing of a real life mother and daughter (Blythe Danner and
Gwyneth) as a movie mother and daughter.
At the time, I wrote:
"In other words, this is a film about
a mentally unhinged poet, yet it offers no insight into her mental
condition, and never uses her poems. Sylvia Plath without the poetry
and without some insight into her mental illness is about as
interesting as "Oklahoma!" without the songs."

Perhaps these tips will help if you have trouble
with the codecs for these movies:
Shiloh says:
FYI when I hypercam vids to make the file size smaller I use
DivX MPEG-4 Fast-Motion for the video compressor, then I use
virtualdub to compress the audio. The properties for the
vids says the video codec: DivX Decoder Filter & audio
codec: Morgan Stream Switcher which I'm not familiar with.
When I compress the audio with virtualdub I use MPEG
Layer-3. A friend of mine told me about compressing the
audio about (6) mos. ago. Like I said previously, only been
capping for a year & a half & I'm no expert. Hopefully this
info will help members with the proper codecs for my vids.
When I cap big brother's I use hypercam mostly & sdp &
asfrecorder if the set up allows me. I stopped using
camtasia cause the file sizes were always too big, could
never figure out the process, over my head lol, plus it cost
too much to buy in my opinion.
A reader says:
You mentioned that some users were
having trouble with the videos on your site. There is a tool
designed to determine what codec is needed for a video.
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ Hope this is useful to you
or your users.
Scoop says:
I made the .wmv versions of each video. The codecs for these: Windows Video V8, Windows Audio 9.
The upside of these is that you know the codecs, and they'll play in
the Windows Media Player. The downside is that they are slightly
larger, and slightly lower quality.

'Caps and comments by Dann:
"Norma Jean and Marilyn"
Well known and often-capped 1996 made-for-HBO movie shows the disturbing side of the life of Marilyn Monroe. In the process of focusing on the bad (drugs, abuse, mental breakdown, etc.), they may have forgotten about the good. No one can argue that she succeeded more on looks than acting talent, of which I personally think she had none, but Marilyn was still a huge star and icon, and this is still a very interesting movie.
The approach of using several actors for different ages of a part is not new (they used 4 for Marilyn), but using Ashley Judd for pre-plastic surgery Marilyn and Mira Sorvino for post-plastic surgery Marilyn was a little different, although the transition was not as seamless as they probably hoped. The movie holds your attention, but the history is pretty shaky in many places.
Not perfect, but this is still an entertaining, worth watching movie. It's been capped a ton, but with the recent release on DVD, look for a new flood. This is my version.

Mr. Nude Celeb takes a look at "Swimming Pool". I think Scoop summed it up very well in his review when he said "It plays out like a slow, arty, Ingmar Bergman remake of Wild Things."
If that turns you off from the movie, then how about this...It's beautifully filmed and chock full of gorgeous nudity from Ludivine Sagnier and Charlotte Rampling!
