"Les Amants Criminels" (1999)
Les Amants Criminels (1999) is a run of the mill, stereotypical French teen angst film, with Natacha Régnier (The Dreamlife of Angels) as the girl, and Jérémie Rénier as her boyfriend. She shows breasts and buns in a swim and sex scene. Oh, maybe I should mention the fact that they kill a classmate for no particular reason, bury him in the woods, and are kidnapped by a Goliath bisexual cannibal mountain man. Being a French film, it has a tragic ending.
IMDB readers say 5.9/10, and it grossed a whole $50k in a US release. They ask us to like the cannibal bisexual kidnapper, which is an awful lot to require from an audience. The film is technically competent, but really lacks a good script (or even a clue as to what is entertaining). D+.

"Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning" (1985)
Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985) is, obviously, one of many sequels to this popular horror saga. What is the formula for one of these?
1) Introduce two or three lovable characters, including one precocious kid, to survive the entire film.
2) Show the recognizable evil icon
3) Kill a couple of people to get the ball rolling.
4) Shows a girls tits.
5) Kill the owner of the tits.
6) Kill a couple more people
7) Return to step 4 until you reach about the 90 minute mark.
8) Have the people in step 1 kill the evil icon 3 or more times.
9) Leave room for another sequel.
So if that is an inviolate formula, what makes a good one?
1) Clear nudity
2) Good gore effects
3) Some startle type surprises.
This was a very good sequel. Rebecca Wood and Juliette Cummins showed breasts in clear light, Deborah Vorhees showed breasts and buns in broad daylight, and Melanie Kinnaman showed breasts through a wet white shirt. I actually had multiple requests for this film. Maltin says BOMB, IMDB voters say 3.2/10, and I say they missed the point. This genre (bad horror film sequels) is all about gore and breasts, and this one has plenty of both. C.
