  • Going down the line, the other films also seem to be marching to their orders.

"Everything You Don't Want to Know About Your Kid’s Sex Life ... The 100-teen-vs.-100-parent promiscuity poll."

The HD trailer from Unaccompanied Minors

  • " It's Christmas Eve and five kids have just been snowed in at the airport -- and there isn't a parent in sight. Unaccompanied Minors follows awkward Spencer (Dyllan Christopher), rich-girl Grace (Gina Mantegna), tomboy Donna (Quinn Shephard), geeky Charlie (Tyler James Williams) and bashful Beef (Brett Kelly) as they try to outwit a disgruntled airport official (Lewis Black) and reunite with their families. Using 'borrowed' golf-carts, a canoe on a snow hill and the help of a reluctant flight attendant (Wilmer Valderrama), these kids are about to prove the holidays aren't about where you are, but who you're with."

Bill Maher - New Rules

"Poland's deputy education minister called for the influential evolutionary theories of Charles Darwin not to be taught in the country's schools, branding them 'lies.'"

  • He has a new take on it. He thinks that Darwin was nutty because he never ate meat. I'm not kidding. Look at the quote below.
  • "The theory of evolution is a lie, an error that we have legalised as a common truth," Miroslaw Orzechowski, the deputy minister in the country's right-wing coalition government, was quoted as saying by the Gazeta Wyborcza daily Saturday.
Orzechowski said the theory was "a feeble idea of an aged non-believer," who had come up with it "perhaps because he was a vegetarian and lacked fire inside him."

Letterman's "Top Ten Surprises In The Mel Gibson Interview"

  • Mel did entire interview in a yarmulke

  • Kicked off interview by asking the cameraman, 'You're not a Jew, are you?'

Movie Reviews:

Yellow asterisk: funny (maybe). White asterisk: expanded format. Blue asterisk: not mine. No asterisk: it probably sucks.

Showyo (2001)

Showyo: An Adolescent is a Japanese Lolita story. Tomokawa is a bicycle policeman in a small village. There is very little crime, so he has found a great way to make the work day seem shorter. He finds pets, keeps them at home for a few days, then returns them to their grateful single female owners. He knows exactly how they can express their gratitude, and dispel some of their loneliness in the bargain.

Yoko (Mayu Ozawa) seduces him, claiming to be 17, but he later discovers that she is 16, is in Junior High School, and is the sister of a simpleton he has befriended.

The description makes it sound like an exploitation movie with a little pedophilia thrown in for good measure, but that is not the case. Tomokawa is a sensitive, caring person, and is in love with Yoko before he knows her true age. They are also connected in a somewhat mystical way. He has a tattoo of a one-winged bird covering his back. The legend has it that he needs the female version of the one-winged bird before either of them can soar. It was Yoko's grandfather that gave him the tattoo, and her mother was supposed to have the female version. For her part, Yoko had probably loved Tomokawa from an early age based on his tattoo.

The photography is absolutely wonderful, and the film also serves as a portrait of small village life in Japan. Okuda, in his directorial debut and also starring as Tomokawa, seemed to have no difficulty being both in front of and behind the camera, and both lead performers won numerous small festival awards for their performances. In spite of a 132 minute running time, this film moves very quickly.

This is a C+. If you enjoy Japanese cinema and don't mind burned-in subtitles, this is one you will want to see.

IMDb readers say 6.7 based on 90 votes.

Dann reports on Art School Confidential:

I guarantee that most people will look at the cover of the DVD for this 2006 comedy and assume it's some T & A sexploitation flick. It isn't, although Sophia Myles looks great in the film's one nude scene. It is in fact a very good black comedy that explores the world of art schools, pretentious artist, and the general if somewhat miserable human condition.

A talented artist since early childhood, Jerome pursues his dreams at art school, where he is introduced to the reality of egotistical wannabe artist professors, the politics of art, and the realization that you probably have to die to be a successful artist.

Throw in heartsick puppy love for a model who is also the daughter of an actually successful artist, a murder mystery involving a serial-killer strangler, and various complications with other students, and you've got a first-rate black comedy.

Everyone did a great job in this flick, and the ending suits the tone of the movie totally. I highly recommend it.

Sophia Myles
