I spent quite some time in Ireland working with Shell, and I found it one of the very most pleasant places in the world (top two, in my book), but I was never able to figure out how to pronounce anything from the way it was spelled. Everything is fairly simple to pronounce once the Irish explain it to you, but the spelling is daunting. That language certainly has an eccentric relationship between orthography and pronunciation.
