90s weekend update time.

Clay Pigeons was one of those black comedies about a series of murders that was all the rage in the late 90s (see also Fargo, The Last Supper, To Die For, Very Bad Things and Goodbye Lover). Most of them were incredibly hateful as so is Clay Pigeons, maybe a place below Very Bad Things on the hatefulness ladder (nothing beats Very Bad Things), but not far off. Within about 40 minutes, 4 people are dead and all in pretty revolting ways. Joaquin Phoenix is well cast basically playing his character from To Die For. That Vince Vaughn smile sure can convince you he killed a bunch of people or sell you something you don't need. It's not a particularly good movie plot wise but it does have a decent cast including the aforementioned two, Janeane Garofalo toning it down surprisingly as she seems to be in her element here. Also British actress Georgina Cates, as a real piece of shit widow who just becomes more hateful when she doesn't get her way before being slaughtered in a pretty unsavoury way, thankfully not seen. Georgina had a brief spurt of movies in the mid 90s ending with Clay Pigeons and then she quit acting, married Skeet Ulrich, had a couple of kids then came back over a decade later for the Bad Grandpa movie. I quite liked seeing her in movies in the 90s, such a shame it ended suddenly. Anyway, one of my favourite movie stories is the one about how she's not even Georgina Cates at all and just made her up to get a role in An Awfully Big Adventure.
