D-Backs' Webb wins wide-open NL Cy Young
race
- Reliever Trevor Hoffman, who was
considered the likely winner by many
experts, finished second in a fairly close
race, with Carpenter in third. Only three
of the voters left Webb off their ballots,
but 9 failed to vote for Hoffman, and
Carpenter was also left off 9 times.
As expected, Santana was the unanimous
choice for AL Cy Young Award
- The amazing thing about this is that
Santana was the unanimous choice as the
best pitcher in the league, yet he was NOT
the best pitcher on his own team! Look at
their stats side-by-side. Liriano schooled
him in every single important category
except innings pitched. Assuming Liriano's
surgery (last week) goes as planned, those
Twins will be a force to reckon with.
Santana is only 27, and Liriano is a mere
23!

Giovannona Long-Thigh (1973)
"Giovannona coscialunga, disonorata con onore," is a Sergio Martino comedy
starring Edwige Fenech. Do not confuse this with the Italian sex farces, it is
far more a mainstream comedy, although Martino did managed to get Edwige
Fenech to show her breasts in a few scenes, and her buns in the trailer.
A new judge goes fishing and discovers industrial pollution in the stream.
Since the only industry in the area is a cheese factory, it is pretty easy to
assign blame. The owner of the factory charges his assistant to find an
"honorable" or high government official to make the problem go away. A
friendly monseigneur, in exchange for a gift of land, delivers just such an
honorable with a built in weakness. He likes other men's wives. The assistant
hits on the solution. Hire a hooker (Fenech) and have her pose as the wife.
Of course, the honorable is already married, as is the factory owner, and
Fenech has a serious drawback in the form of a potty mouth. In fact, much of
the humor of the film was to be found in the dialogue, which included many
different dialects. They made a real point of trying to catch the flavor of
the dialogue in the sub-titles rather than translate literally, but I am sure
this is much funnier to Italian speakers. There are several running gags, many
of them what I would call musical beds, where people keep changing rooms, and
nobody is where anyone else thinks.
Fenech, as usual, looks phenomenal. In the special features, she mentions
that she made a conscious decision to stop doing nudity after she realized how
powerful film as a medium was.
This was the first comedy by the Fenech and Martino team after a succession
of Gialli. Fenech claims that he invented this genre with this picture.
Honestly, I found it only mildly amusing, but liked the cast very much, and
thought Fenech stole the show.

New Jack City (1991)
Mario van Peebles first film was a major innovation in black gangster films
at the time it was made. The film was considered so realistic and inflammatory
that it was actually withheld from some theaters for fear of gang fights.
It chronicles the rise and fall of a drug lord who did for crack what Henry
Ford did for automobiles. Two rogue cops, Ice Tea and Judd Nelson,
intend to take him down. Their plan is to clean up a a crackhead (Chris Rock)
and put him under cover.
Add me to the list who liked this film. I was never sure where it was
going, Wesley Snipes was appropriately nasty as the head bad guy, and I liked
the authenticity of the characters very much. While the film has a definite
air of authenticity, it most certainly doesn't condone drug use or gang
activity, nor does it make either seem like an attractive life style.
This is a C+.
IMDb readers say 6.1. Ebert enjoyed it at 3.5 stars. Rotten Tomatoes shows
78% positive reviews.

Notes and collages
The Celebrity Stripper series continues
Salma Hayek in Dogma (l) and From Dusk 'til Dawn
(r) |

|
... Ms. Hayek is a stripper in Dogma (among other things.) I recommend this film for you who like a different slant on things: the
story is about two disgruntled angels. It was made by the same guys who put
together "Clerks" and "Chasing Amy." You can see one of those guys ("Silent
Bob") in this collage.
... The other collage is technically not a strip scene in the
conventional sense, but Ms. Hayek looks amazing in this very creative film
about vampires ...

WENN News reports that Heidi Fleiss has hired Mike Tyson to be a male escort
at Heidi's Stud Farm, her new brothel for women in Nevada. She said, "I told
him, 'You're going to be my big stallion.' It's every man's fear that their
girlfriend will go for Mike Tyson."
* I guess now we'll find out if "Iron Mike" is just a
nickname.
* This is impossible to believe! Mike Tyson, PROSTITUTING himself?!!
After first rejecting the donation of 4,000 Talking Jesus dolls, the Marine
Reserves' Toys For Tots program agreed to take them, saying they have "found
appropriate places for these items"...It's going to be a happy Christmas for all
the poor children of Branson, Missouri...So, they finally accepted Jesus
* It suddenly dawned on them: how many Muslim and
Jewish kids would have even applied to receive Christmas gifts?
On this day in 1973, President Richard Nixon made his famous "I am not a crook"
statement to a meeting of A.P. editors at Disneyland.
