Special announcement:

You will notice that Flautista has a new format today in his caps from Standing Still. That is because he is joining our team as a regular, everyday kind of guy doing his captures especially for us, and giving us a new, European flavor that I personally have been missing since ICMS retired.  As a further bonus, Flauti has always been a big fan of Tuna's, and the master's work has inspired him to do collectible collages rather than just plain single frames, so his new work is not only ours, but gorgeous as well!

(I'll get a new border for his section as soon as I can!)

Welcome and bienvenidos!

Updates:

  • Charlie's French Cinema Nudity Site is uploaded

  • TUNA watch: the number of items in the Tuna collection is now 96,701 as of the end of November. He added 1,486 in November.

The Hitchhiker, Volume 1

The Hitchhiker was one of HBO's earlier attempts at original series programming. It began in 1985, and the frequency varies. The experimented with a new one every week at one point around 1987. They whole thing tailed off in the late 80s, but they were still producing a small number of episodes as late as 1992. In concept it was similar to the old Alfred Hitchcock TV series, except that it was in color and R-rated. Hitchcock was replaced by some young hunky guy, but the general narrative concept remained the same - the host would say a few omniscient words at the beginning and end of each episode, and the stories usually involved murder and/or the macabre.

There have been three volumes so far and there are ten episodes on each volume. The existing anthologies therefore present 30 of the 85 total episodes. I don't know what logic was used to determine which episodes were chosen for which anthology, but they don't really seem to be in any kind of order. This disk includes episodes from a four year span and, although it is Volume 1, does not include any of the first 13 episodes.

The following chart summaries the episodes on this volume. The episode numbers and air dates are taken from tv.com.

"the apparent desire by some of Hollywood's hottest young female stars to be photographed getting in and out of limousines in short skirts while wearing absolutely no undergarments is arguably one of Tinseltown's most disturbing new crazes."

  • Disturbing? I don't know. I'm not that disturbed by it. In fact, I don't mind at all. If I had absolute dictatorial power over the culture, like that guy in Turkmenistan, I'd outlaw female underwear, although I would allow my minions, henchmen, and lackeys to mandate underwear in certain exceptional cases. I'm lookin' at you, Rosie O'Donnell.

Movie Reviews:

Yellow asterisk: funny (maybe). White asterisk: expanded format. Blue asterisk: not mine. No asterisk: it probably sucks.

A Few Hours of Sunlight (1971)

This is a very French love story in which Claudine Auger and Marc Porel get 110 minutes to soak your hankie, abetted by a soundtrack full of treacle from Michel Legrand and a back-up cast that includes a very young Gerard Depardieu, the ubiquitous Frenchman who is the only living human with a facial feature bigger than De Gaulle's nose.

For those that care, here is a spoiler plot outline.

Porel is tired of porking Barbara Hershey, so he takes off for a country vacation at his sister's. There, he meets a married Claudine Auger, and the two fall madly in love. She is an instant cure for his depression, so he takes her to Paris, after kicking Hershey's butt out of his flat. Things are fine for a while, until the relationship gets comfortable, then she overhears him telling his buddy that he is beginning to resent her for doing too much for him. So she checks into a hotel and swallows a pharmacy. He pretends to be sorry.

End Spoilers

You might be wondering how they managed to fill the 110 minute running time with this minimal plot. The answer is, they didn't. For instance, there is a long scene with the two lovers frolicking in a field of sheep. We also see them walking through Paris in real time. In case you haven't yet guessed, I did not care for this film. Further, I would treat anyone who did with a great deal of suspicion.

This is a D.

IMDb readers say 4.5, but based on only 16 votes.

Claudine Auger shows her buns and gets around to both breasts eventually, one in each of two scenes.

Pat's comments in yellow...

The Internet is buzzing over a heartfelt statement released by Lindsay Lohan about the death of Robert Altman, who directed her in "A Prairie Home Companion."  It's filled with grammatical errors, misspellings and loopy non sequiturs about how lucky she was "to of been able to work" with him, because "he left us with a legend that all of us have the ability to do."  She advises, "Make a searching
and fearless moral inventory of yourselves' (12st book) - everytime there's a triumph in the world a million souls hafta be trampled on. - altman Its true."  It's signed, "Be adequite.  Lindsay Lohan."  The UK Independent newspaper said she was either on a bender or it was "Exhibit A for the indictment of America's education system."

*  That's not fair: she dropped out before she finished the 12st grade.

Wednesday in London, Iain Hollingshead won the Literary Review's annual Bad Sex In Fiction Award for his debut novel, "Twenty Something."  Judges were impressed by his description of "bulging trousers" and "a commotion of grunts and squeaks, flashing unconnected images and explosions of a million little particles."  Runners-up included Tim Willcocks' medieval novel, "The Religion," in which a couple has sex on an anvil and "some seething and nameless brew rose up through his spine and filled his brain with the Devil's Fire"... and David Mitchell's "Black Swan Green," in which a woman's breasts are compared to "a pair of Danishes."  Hollingshead, the youngest winner ever at age 25, accepted his "Bad Sex" award from Courtney Love and said he hopes he wins every year.

*  He won a lovely gold trophy and an evening of bad sex with Courtney Love.

The Hollywood Reporter issued its annual list of the highest-paid actresses, and with Julia Roberts taking the year off, Nicole Kidman
came in #1.  Kidman demands $17 million a picture despite a four-year, unbroken string of money-losing flops such as "Stepford Wives," "Bewitched" and "The Interpreter."  "Birth" and "The Human Stain" made only $5 million each, and "Dogville" grossed $1.5 million.

*  The only one who makes money from Nicole Kidman movies is Nicole Kidman.
